Books for Babies: HOPE

This is a picture of the letter that accompanies every book distributed to the 14 NICU's we partner with. I wrote this letter three days after Cameron passed away. We had decided, as a part of his memorial service, to send books to the NICU in his memory and it was suggested that I explain the purpose of the books to their recipients. While "Project: Cameron's Story" had not officially come to fruition and we were still very much in the throws of our early grief, I knew that the letter could not show that - I knew that it had to offer ONLY hope to its recipients. For this reason, the letter has remained unchanged for all these years...just like my love for my sweet Cam.

Books for Babies: A Little Bit at a Time….

(A memory that still resonates today!)

Yesterday, at one of the bookraising events I had an opportunity to meet a mother who had had a baby in the NICU at AMC and received a book through Project: Cameron’s Story.

Her eldest daughter was busy participating in a craft and she was talking about her youngest daughter who was about a year old and had spent nearly 3 weeks in the NICU. She was talking about her NICU stay, what the book meant to her, and at one point she got so choked up…and said, I better not say anymore (about the book) because I would just cry. I spoke briefly about our stay in the NICU and mentioned Cameron. Her eyes got wide and she said, “You’re Cameron’s mom?” (God, I LOVE the rare moments when I am still given that title!) I proudly said, “Yes, I am.” We stood and spoke briefly about some of the details of the project and then the woman said, “So, how is Cameron doing?” It was a fair question and I was not bothered by it at all. You see, when the books are delivered to the admission beds in the NICU, there is a short letter from me congratulating the parent on their new little one and telling about how storytelling helped me bond with Cameron during uncertain times. It never talks about his death. Because, well, when you are meeting your premature baby for the first time, hearing Cameron’s WHOLE story is not helpful – in fact, it is downright scary.

So, I took a deep breath, and explained to this woman that Cameron had passed in October of 2009. She was shocked – but seemed to handle it very well.

Quite a while later, the woman found me in the store again right before she left. She reached out to give me a big hug and thanked me again and she said through her tears, “I want to thank you for this. When our daughter was in the NICU, we were so scared…so alone. When we received the book I felt as if it were someone reaching out to me, someone who knew and understood what we were going through. I can’t explain it…it was just a book but to us it was so much more. I used to think the book was so special because it was coming from a mom who knew how we felt – but I thought it was from a mom who had taken their baby home. When I found out you had lost so much…and were still trying to give so much back, well, the book just means so much more now. I said I wasn’t going to go into this…because I might start crying…but if you are strong enough to do all of this, then I am strong enough to talk about it.” (At this point she shared some personal things about her daughter’s health/NICU stay). Then she finished by saying, “There are so many things you could have done after your son passed – and no one would have blamed you one bit. But you did this instead and for that I am so grateful.”

Her words were so touching…and I will carry them with me always. What she said made me think. I thought about all of the things I could have done after Cameron passed. I thought about that deep, dark black hole I would have liked to have crawled into…the one I still think about crawling into (less often – but often enough). I am glad I never fully succumb to the black hole (for too long anyway). There is still so much to do. I have to continue to share Cameron’s story. Cameron’s life, his story, is changing the world, a little bit at a time. I am so proud to be the mother of this precious little angel. Thank you to all of you who have helped me on this quest. You, too, are helping change the world, a little bit at a time. Thank you!

Fact of the Day #28 - Did you know that all books donated to Project: Cameron’s Story need to be absolutely BRAND NEW with as little handling as possible? This is because the books are being donated to the NICU – a sterile environment.

Some of the best books to donate are ones traditionally geared for 4-7 year olds. These “picture storybooks” have excellent pictures and LOTS of words. These books help promote a 15 minute bonding time between mother and baby.

Due to the various religious beliefs of the families in the NICU, we ask that you please avoid donating books that are overtly religious in nature.

Often, people will ask what Cameron’s favorite stories were. We include them here to give others an idea of the type of stories that might be appropriate. There are MANY other titles that would be just as suitable for these purposes.

o Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
o Stellaluna
o Love You Forever
o Where the Wild Things Are
o Danny and The Dinosaur
o The Giant Jam Sandwich
o The Poky Little Puppy
o The Little Engine that Could
o The Gingerbread Man
o Rainbow Fish
