SUNY Empire Faculty Member Reimagines Famous Thanksgiving Painting

Raul Manzano, assistant professor and award-winning artist, has unveiled his Thanksgiving-themed painting “Welcome All!” Manzano’s work is inspired by Norman Rockwell’s painting, “Freedom from Want.”

“This particular painting has been in my mind for a while. With all the things happening in the world, with global discrimination against minority groups and the hate that has been created among various groups, I ask the question, ‘Why can’t we live together and respect each other regardless of our differences?’ And the idea grew from there,” said Raul. https://www.esc.edu/news/releases/2022/suny-empire-faculty-member-reimagines-famous-thanksgiving-painting-.php.

“Before graduating from SUNY Empire, I was a laborer, barely making a living. After graduation, I quickly advanced to becoming a technical writer/editor/specialist and a published author. I earned a B.S. in communications and minored in technical writing. At 80 years of age, I am working on my 20th novel. SUNY Empire State was a godsend to me, and because of its specialized, multiple programs, distance learning and knowledgeable staff, I could excel where brick and mortar colleges failed to meet my needs.” — Philip Morehouse ’96.

"I withdrew from my first semester at SUNY Empire following the birth of my daughter, thinking I could only be a successful student OR mother - not both.

Two years later, I'm about to finish my B.A. in cultural studies and I have been accepted to graduate school for SUNY Empire's Master of Arts in Learning and Emerging Technologies. Those late-night feedings and study sessions were worth it!

I hope to someday rejoin SUNY Empire as a professor and mentor to help others bloom where they are planted." — Shannon Roberts '22.
