Exceptional Families of the Military 2022 Year End Wrap Up

Special Needs Family??

Who knew that Cindy Lou would homeschool?

One of my favorite Christmas posts! :)

The Whos down in Whoville were much older than when…
a young Grinch stole Christmas and returned it again.
The children got married and the parents went gray.
The Grinch became mayor and Max ran away.

And Cindy Lou Who who was now 42…
Homeschooled her five sons and sweet Peggy Sue.
She spent most of her days, tired and spent
And wondered and wondered where all the fun went.

Where was the magic and sparkle she knew?
All she could see were the things left to do.
There were lessons to plan and subjects to cover
Like phonics, math facts…and the history of rubber.

And now it was Christmas and all she could see
Were the gifts to be wrapped and a lop-sided tree.
She wanted to smile, she wanted to play,
But the lists and the tasks would not go away

But one day as she watched her kids study and write,
A thought came to her mind and she gave up the fight.
Cindy Lou’s idea was brilliant and bold,
A simple solution to feeling tired and old.

“We will stop doing school,” she said with a grin.
“Close your books now and let real learning begin.
We have presents to buy and cookies to bake,
Fun to be had and crafts that we’ll make.”

No more will I listen to those who know best.
I know that I need some fun time and rest.
I need to slow down and get off my phone
For soon they’ll be gone and have kids of their own.

I will not spend my days on things that don’t matter;
Instead, I’ll play games like Who-Chutes and Who-Ladders.
I will not miss this wonderful time of my life.
I will not get caught up in busyness and strife.

So Cindy Lou Who who was still 42
And still had homeschooling and parenting to do,
Decided right then that what matters most
Were not books, or lists, or her friend’s latest post.

She had been given a gift of six kids and a spouse,
And she would enjoy them in spite of her house.
It would not be easy, nor come naturally,
But she would do right and choose family.

Navigating the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) as a Military Homeschooler

Considering the EFMP as a military homeschool family? The process can be confusing! However, this can be a significant resource for military families. Join Natalie Mack (HSLDA Military Community Outreach Coordinator) and Miriah Schmidt (EFMP Case Liaison for NSA Washington FFSC) as they navigate the different aspects of the EFMP and how it could impact your homeschool journey with the military. Don’t forget to bring your questions as we learn together!

PIVOTING- it is OK‼️

What's one of the best parts of homeschooling? The freedom to PIVOT when things aren’t working.

When we first started homeschooling, I searched for the "perfect" curriculum. After a lot of research, I placed an order and thought we were set for years to come. Boy did I have a lot to learn! 😂

As you can probably guess, we didn't stick with that curriculum! Instead, we embraced every season of life. Over the years we took part in co-ops, classes at a university model school, unit studies, online classes, dual credit courses, and at one point we even hired a teacher to help my son with calculus. (Boy was that worth it!)

Fast forward about 15 years, my son is now in college. (Graduating in December - yay!)

Here's the point. It's okay to try different things. That's the BLESSING of homeschooling! If your child isn't focused or interested... try something new. It's worth the time and energy.

And don't forget to pray about it! 💙

Happy 🦃 Thanksgiving to my fellow military families!!!
Please read the message below from our President, Jim Mason

“Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.”— A.A. Milne

Dear HSLDA Families and Friends:

Here at HSLDA, we have to make room for a lot of gratitude because there’s so much to be thankful for.

First, we’re grateful for our member families. You folks are at the forefront of homeschooling, showing the world how much this educational method works simply through your day-to-day dedication.

And of course, we so appreciate our donors and supporters. You make it possible to keep homeschooling free!

So, to all of you, we wish the greatest of Thanksgiving blessings! May your families gather for mutual cheer and giving of thanks, not to mention that feast of turkey and all the trimmings.

Now, some of you may be like one of our attorneys. His family doesn’t care for turkey, so they plan to partake in a non-conventional dinner of Thanksgiving fondue. (Mmmm! More cheese, please!)

Whatever traditions your family observes, we hope that the holiday brings you joy and togetherness!
From our family to yours

--Jim Mason, HSLDA President
