So many women are capable of incredible things.
But somewhere along the way, they stopped believing in themselves.

Life got busy.
They put everyone else first.
They forgot who they used to be.

We see it all the time.

And we also see what happens when women remember who they are.

Everything changes.

Happy International Women’s Day! We believe in you! ♥️

Yesterday, I spoke to students at BYU on what I wish I had known at 20 about faith, career, and the future. Here’s what I wish someone had told me:

1. Fear and growth often go together.
Growth happens in the stretch—when you push beyond what feels safe and take on challenges that make you uncomfortable.  If you’re completely comfortable, you’re probably not stretching.

2. You will be tested. Build resilience now. Every experience—every challenge, every risk, every opportunity—is shaping you. When my life shifted, I didn’t rise to the level of my goals. I fell to the level of my preparation.

3. The best opportunities often come when you say yes before you feel completely prepared.

4. Looking back, here’s what I would tell my 20-year-old self:  “Something will go wrong. And you will be stronger than you think.  You will rebuild. You will stretch. You will reinvent. You will surprise yourself.  You are not behind. You are becoming.”

Your potential is not determined by how predictable your life is.  It’s determined by who you choose to become when it isn’t.

I wish someone had told me these things 15 years ago. Here’s what I’ve learned:

1. You remember more than you think you do.
The skills you used every single day to organize chaos, manage schedules, and solve problems are real, valuable strengths that didn’t disappear just because they weren’t on a résumé.

2. You will question yourself. Do it anyway.
It’s normal to wonder if you’re ready after time away, but growth rarely feels comfortable. Step forward even when your confidence is still catching up, and the most difficult part is over!

3. Everyone feels behind in something. You’re not alone.
The working mom, the stay-at-home mom, the executive, and the entrepreneur all compare themselves to someone else. Please give yourself the same grace you give your kids.

4. Ask questions. It shows strength, not weakness.
Curiosity is a sign that you care and want to grow. The right people will see your value and respect you for being willing to learn.

5. Unpaid work IS experience.
You have the qualities that every workplace desperately needs: resilience, leadership, and empathy. The years you spent raising children, volunteering, supporting a household, or caring for family built you into who you are today.

When Heather Nemelka founded Elavare, she didn’t have anyone. It was lonely and difficult. She started Elavare to give mothers the resources and support she didn’t have when she returned to the workforce.

I’ve always wanted to go camping in the winter time. Actually, just kidding! I don’t like the cold. But we’re doing it at a cabin with water and heat! So happy to have an excuse to have fun this weekend!
