There's a moment that happens on almost every Epic expedition. Someone you'd never normally cross paths with does something quietly generous, and it reframes the entire trip.
A Kokoda porter who's walked the track a hundred times and still points out the things you'd miss. A Mongolian herder who waves a group of strangers into his ger like it's the most natural thing in the world. A family in the Hunza Valley who hands out fruit from their orchard at the trailhead before you've even introduced yourself.
No transaction. No agenda. Just people being people in places where that still means something.

Most hard treks offer scenery. Kokoda offers something harder to explain π΅π¬
The track runs past the real battle sites in roughly the order they happened. The campaign was never cleared away, so eighty years on there are foxholes still cut into the ridgelines, rifles and helmets the jungle has slowly reclaimed, and graves of the men who died here.
At Isurava, four granite pillars read Courage, Endurance, Mateship, Sacrifice over the ridge where Australian and Papuan troops held against a far larger force for five days in 1942.
Only around 3,000 people walk it in a year. Long stretches with nobody out there but the group and the jungle.
A place that stays with people long after the mud washes off.

A tent at altitude is the smallest home you'll ever love βΊοΈ
Safe to say our team at Epic have spent quite a significant portion of our nights sleeping in tents. There's something special about crawling in, pulling the zip shut, and the enormous world outside going quiet.
Most people book a trip to these far flung places for the views or the summits, but often we've found it's the little moments like winding down after a long day of trekking in your own tiny little dome that are the most memorable.
Pictured are our favorite expeditions tents deep in the Karakoram. βΊοΈ ποΈ

A Epic Expedition to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan πΉπ―πΊπΏ
We start in the bazaars of Samarkand, then cross into Tajikistan's Fann Mountains for 63 kilometers of empty trail. Sheer valleys, still lakes and the occasional local shepherd passing through.
We climb the 4,750-meter Chimtarga Col, then descend from Big Allo Lake down to Small Allo Lake and into a pocket the locals call "Little Tuscany," before heading back to the civilisation of Bukhara and Samarkand.

K2BC vs EBC. Two base camps, two completely different treks π₯Ύ
Everest Base Camp pulls 30,000 to 45,000 trekkers a year. K2 Base Camp gets 1,000 to 2,000. That ratio tells you most of what you need to know about these two treks.
EBC: walk into Nepal on a tourist visa, sleep in teahouses with hot meals and pool tables, push to Kala Patthar at 5,545m. Solo trekking still allowed.
K2BC: trekking and mountaineering visa, Letter of Invitation from a licensed operator, $300 Central Karakoram National Park permit, mandatory tour. Ten to twelve days of camping on glacier past Askole, no villages, four-season tents, mess tents, generators at every camp. Concordia sits at 5,000m surrounded by four 8,000m peaks.
The K2BC season is one window. June, July, August. That's it.
