DID YOU KNOW PORTSMOUTH INVADED PUERTO RICO?

Local attorney John McHenry has brought to light the participation of Scioto County in the mostly forgotten Spanish American War of 1898. A local National Guard unit, Company H, participated in that “splendid little war” as it was called. Local newspapers ran constant updates of “the boys” from the moment of their departure to their return seven months later. During that time they “liberated” Puerto Rico. Portsmouth went wild on their return. Parades, dedications and honorifics of every kind proclaimed their sacrifice would never be forgotten – but it was. McHenry’s book, Scioto County’s War With Spain tells the story of this moment of local history.

The author will conduct a book signing the Saturday, March 20, at the Ghosts In The Attic, 518 2nd Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, starting at 1:00 pm. All Scioto County residents will receive a discount of 20% off the purchase price of $21.99. The author will also contribute 10% of the proceeds to the Scioto County Heritage Museum.

[01/25/21]   People have been saying for a few years, that we need a place where folks can see the history of the county. A small group of us are starting such a place. But we need funds to get the “Marting’s Annex” turned into a functioning museum. Help us with our dream!
