I work from my garage in Portland. 80% of my clients are outside my region, but that other 20%? They are a vital part of my business.

Earlier in my career, those ratios were reversed. Being "local" was the bridge to building trust when I was an unknown quantity. Today, I still see that proximity bias helps search engines—and humans—decide who to hire.

If you offer personal services (coaching, consulting, strategy), people often feel more comfortable knowing you're nearby, even if you never meet in person.

Ignore the folks telling you that search—whether we're talking Google, ChatGPT, or some other mechanism—is dead. They're just trying to scare you.

But, search and online discovery HAVE indeed changed. And fast!

I mentioned this in a previous post, but keyword matching no longer works. Content "just for SEO" isn't being promoted." And goofy gimmicks like stuffing an FAQ onto your homepage definitely isn't effective.

So what's actually working?

💡Solution-Away Strategy: Meeting high-value, great match clients exactly where they are in their search journey. (Even if the keyword volume is lower.)

✈️ High Altitude Thinking: Focusing on one "Pillar of Authority" rather than a dozen thin blog posts just for the Google bot.

🤝 Human-to-Human Connection: Using search data to understand—and solve—your audience's real-world challenges.

If you still want to be visible when people search, there are very doable pathways forward—and for some folks, there are more opportunities than ever before. But competing around the basics is a losing tactic.

I am going to keep screaming this from the rooftop until everyone listens to me:
The era of "ranking for keywords" as a primary tactic is over. Today, sustainable visibility is about the intersection of search intent, topical authority, and a high-quality user experience.

If you or your SEO agency is optimizing for a phrase without considering the why behind the search, you might see a spike in traffic that your SEO agency can pat themselves on the back about, but you won't see a shift in your bottom line. And that spike will quickly disappear every single time.

When you align your content by focusing on topics with what your audience is actually seeking, you move beyond mere "dictionary-style" matching. You start creating resources that don't just sit at the top of a results page—they actually create quality leads.
