Flowers for Embracing the JOYS of Imperfection is our newest piece from the BIG FEELS series that’s now live in the shop, and looking for its forever home to bring joy and whimsy to.

I started painting these tulips on a whim at the end of March, when winter here in Maine felt like it was never going to end. I’d just gotten some rejections from local art shows and was feeling down.

This piece was one of the first that I painted and it all started with a low-stakes creative exercise to let my inner-child out to play.

I wanted to let the process be messy and playful, so I chose a panel with a splotch of a failed portrait on its otherwise pristine surface. I figured working on an “already ruined” canvas would keep me from overthinking or trying too hard.

Thing is — as I painted and drew, I found the splotch that I thought had “ruined” the panel to add unexpected texture and color seeping through the layers. I loved it!! The imperfection made it more interesting.

So now you know why I titled it what I did.

Bring it home as a source of delight in your day to day and a reminder than imperfections and mistakes aren’t a sign that anything is wrong — they’re the sign of an interesting life worth living.
