Sunset Olympic National Park

The moon fully eclipsing the sun from the vantage point of the recent Artemis II moon flyby on April 6, 2026. The faint glow on the left side of the moon is reflected light from the earth.

I generally don't repost images but I had to post this NASA image because I love the sense that it gives of the orb of the moon suspended in the emptiness of space surrounded by stars.

Night and day at a high desert lake in Oregon’s outback

It’s International Dark Sky Week! https://idsw.darksky.org. I took advantage of a clear night to capture this image of the Milky Way reflected in a shallow alkaline desert lake in the Oregon Outback Dark Sky Sanctuary https://oregonoutbackdarkskysanctuary.com.

The night sky at this location was ablaze with stars—probably 5,000 visible to the naked eye. It was a very cold night with temperatures in the low teens but there was little wind to mess up the reflection in the lake.

Technical: Canon EOS Ra, Canon 24-70 RF f2.8 lens at 24 mm. Sky and reflection: 10-60s exposures at f2.8, ISO 1600. Mountains: 1-120s exposure at f2.8, ISO 3200. Processed and blended in Pixinsight and Phototshop.

No super bloom this year in Anza Borrego but there were some nice patches of flowers scattered across the desert.
