Ah, Portland. Home of the perpetual drizzle, where the sun is a mythical beast and "waterproof" is less a feature and more a state of existence. Bicycling in the Pacific Northwest's favorite condiment (rain) is an art form, a slightly damp one. If you must venture out into the liquid sunshine, here’s how to survive the daily aquatic ballet without ending up in the Willamette.
-Riding Techniques & Road Safety: The Oregon Trail Edition
In Portland, traction is a suggestion, not a rule.
-Slow Down Significantly. You’re not in a race; you’re participating in a prolonged existential dread about pavement grip. Approach corners like you’re carrying a very expensive, very fragile glass of Pinot Noir.
-Brake Early and Gently If you have rim brakes, they first need to announce their presence to the water gods with a shriek, then they might eventually slow you down. Apply smoothly unless you want to practice your impromptu breakdancing slide on East Burnside.
-Avoid Hazards Those painted lines and metal plates? They become free ice rinks the moment H2O touches them. Treat them with the respect you'd give a grumpy beaver. Avoid the puddles of existential dread—they hide potholes deep enough to swallow a fixed-gear bike whole.
-Steer, Don't Lean Keep it upright, friend. Leaning is for sunny days in California.
-Increase Following Distance Give other vehicles extra room. They can't see you, largely because their wipers are working overtime and their windows are just as sad as yours.
-Essential Gear & Bike Setup: The Portland Fashion Statement
The goal isn't looking good; it's looking less wet than the person next to you at the espresso cart.
-Visibility Wear bright, reflective clothing. We’re talking neon green, hot pink, the kind of colors that scream "I am a person, please don't run me over!" Use bright lights—front and rear. Being seen is 90% of the battle against the gray void.
-Waterproof Apparel Invest in a good jacket with phrases like "Gore-Tex" or "Futurelight" attached. Rain pants are key, as are overshoes, unless you enjoy squishy socks all day. A cycling cap under the helmet is mandatory; it keeps the endless drizzle out of your eyes and adds a certain je ne sais quoi to your ensemble.
-Fenders (Mudguards) If you don't have fenders, you're not a true Portland cyclist; you're a novice subjecting yourself and everyone behind you to a constant facial water-blasting. Get full-length ones. Do it for the culture.
-Tires Get some chunky all-weather tires. Lowering the pressure slightly gives you a better grip on the perpetually moist tarmac.
