Last week I had the great joy of visiting Queen of Peace Catholic Church and School in Salem.

What a blessing it was to be with this wonderful parish school community, and especially with the young people. They welcomed me with such joy, asked thoughtful questions, and were eager to share with me the things that matter to them, from their friends to their playground adventures.

I was also very impressed by their First Communion projects, which featured a monstrance with an image of Jesus revealed within the Eucharist. What a beautiful way to help teach and express the truth of the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist.

During my visit, I was grateful to bless the school’s new multipurpose room, sprinkling the walls with holy water as the students gathered together in prayer. This new space will be a real gift for the life and mission of the school.

My thanks to Fr. Tim Mockaitis, Principal Carl Mucken, the staff, students, and families of Queen of Peace for such a warm and joyful welcome. Please know of my prayers for you all.

Join Archbishop Sample and thousands of pro-life advocates at the annual Oregon March for Life next Saturday. For more than 50 years, Oregonians have gathered at the State Capitol to remember the lives lost to abortion and to peacefully witness in support of the dignity of every human life.

Today I had the great joy of celebrating Mass with the students, faculty, and families of Christ the King Catholic School.

It was a beautiful school Mass in honor of Pentecost, as we asked the Holy Spirit to renew His gifts in each of us and to help us grow as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

I was especially moved by the reverence of the student body, the beautiful singing of the student choir, including portions of Paul Jernberg’s Mass of the Holy Spirit, and the excellent proclamation of the Word of God by the student readers. It is always a great encouragement to see our young people entering so prayerfully into the sacred liturgy.

I was also very grateful to spend time with the 8th grade class and to offer them a special blessing as they prepare to finish their time at Christ the King and move on to high school. May the Holy Spirit guide them, strengthen them, and keep them close to the Lord.

Thank you to the whole Christ the King community for your warm welcome and for your beautiful witness of faith.
