The heatwave is here in Portland Oregon, but things are going great with the Boxjoy project. Turns out, having your feet in water really helps beat the heat. The last frame is how I am currently growing cucurbits. In buckets tied together. These zucchinis have 20 gallons of water each. That’s not usually enough water, but I am also constraining their roots to be smaller.

All of the cucurbits are a challenge here at boxjoy because they are SO THIRSTY. This variety of zucchini (cash machine) was able to provide 8 zucchini’s with the 5 gallons we work with. That’s pretty impressive. .

With her roots constrained to a 3” diameter tube within the 5 gallon bucket, this cauliflower is certainly being added to the list of veggies that can grow in only 5 gallons. This one matured with a gallon to spare. .

Boxjoy is all about outdoor, OneTimeFill, Set&forget passive (or kratky method) hydroponics. Because of that, we do succession planting of crops. Today was the out with the old, in with the new.
