🎬 Turning Grief into Purpose: Joanie Fox’s Journey with ASIST

From Broadway stages to behind the camera, Joanie Fox’s creative path took a powerful turn after the loss of her friend Derek Rieth. That grief sparked Beatlore - a documentary honouring his life and confronting the silence around su***de.

To ensure the film was trauma-informed and supportive, Joanie turned to LivingWorks ASIST su***de intervention training. The skills she gained helped her navigate sensitive conversations and build a safe space for healing and storytelling.

“With LivingWorks ASIST, you get that practice and a chance to build confidence… I can do this, and I have resources and people I can reach out to.” - Joanie Fox

As Beatlore nears its 2026 release, Joanie continues to advocate for ***dePrevention and community education.

Repost: simply would not exist without Portland Events and Film - please reach out to City Council immediately. Together, let’s remind them how vital PEFO is to our community! 💪🎥

As the city struggles to close a budget gap, an amendment put forward by Councilors Green and Dunphy would eliminate the $11 million in ongoing city General Fund dollars that are currently directed to flow to Prosper Portland for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The lack of general fund dollars flowing to Prosper will impact the Film Office. The implications of this amendment, should it pass, would impact the Events & Film Office as early as July.

The councilors further state that the limited funds in Prosper’s Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) should be used by Prosper Portland to backfill that General Fund gap. Prosper informs us that the use of SIF funds to cover these expenses is not legally possible and they would be forced to cut programs and services, including all of their Econ Dev offices, like the Events & Film Office.

This amendment, if passed and implemented, would lead to the elimination of the Office of Events & Film.

If the Events and Film Office is eliminated, important grant programs that help develop our production community would also be eliminated:

🎥 Amplify Portland: Local Filmmakers Production Grant
🎥 Post-Production Grant
🎥 Portland Festivals & Screenings Grant

Please reach out to members of City Council as soon as possible and share your perspective regarding the impact of this amendment and the catastrophic effect it will have on our production and workforce development. Given that the City Council vote on our budget is scheduled for THIS Wednesday, May 21, please prioritize this request.

See comment section for a template email and Council contacts.

May is and Beatlore is proud to show support for Backline and the work they do to support the mental health and wellness of music industry families. If you’re part of the industry and you need help finding therapy, support groups, financial aid or just someone who understands, Backline’s got you.

If you aren’t in the music industry, or need immediate mental health support, you can call or text 988 to be connected with the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
