Amy Moua, a senior majoring in Writing and Psychology at Lakeland University, wrote a book review for upcoming visiting writer, Taylor Byas' poetry collection, I Done Clicked My Heel Three Times, that was published through LUJ's literary magazine, Zasshi.
Moua highlighted poetic pieces from the collection that resonate with the stages of girlhood, innocence and resilience in an exploration of self and community. She commends Byas' honesty and authenticity which, "compel readers to confront the unpleasant truths connected to gender roles and societal expectations."
Taylor Byas will be featured on November 7-8 at Lakeland University for the Great Lakes Writers Festival. Don't miss the chance to hear and learn more about her poetic proses in person!
I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times — A Book Review Lakeland University’s Amy Moua reviews poet Taylor Byas’s new collection.
Leah Henckel, a senior majoring in Creative Writing at Lakeland University, wrote a book review of The Last Innocent Year, a short story collection by Kerry Jones. She also had the honor of her review being published in LUJ's literary magazine, Zasshi.
In her review, Henckel praises the collection, noting, "While the protagonists are all women, these stories, beautifully haunting and balanced with humor, aren’t solely reserved for the female gaze." She highlights the collection's ability to provoke empathy and stir emotions, appealing to a wide audience beyond gender perspectives.
Kerry Jones will be one of the featured visiting writers at this year's Great Lakes Writers Festival, taking place on November 7-8. For those curious about The Last Innocent Year, the event provides an excellent opportunity to explore Jones' amazing storytelling. Don't miss it!

Join us for the opening reception of "From Where I Sit" this Friday, Sept. 20th at 4:00 pm at the Bradley Gallery! The exhibit features 75 incredible artist from across Wisconsin, showcasing the talents of Wisconsin Visual Artists from the southeast and northeast chapters. Lakeland's very own, Amy Kafka, a Studio Art major, was selected to join the exhibit and feature her piece titled, "Willow."
