Dr. J ♥️ prayers for James III, Mrs. Pam and all family and friends.

Throwback to 2008. is one of my absolute musical heroes. There are certain musicians who transcend the instruments they play, and James is certainly one of them. He doesn’t just play the alto saxophone and flute beautifully, he takes you somewhere every time he plays. His solos are often the emotional high point of any project he appears on alongside legends like his childhood bandmate Freddie Hubbard.

He was also a key member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra from 1957 to 1961 during its formative Chicago era. If you haven’t already, check out Freddie Hubbard’s “The Black Angel”, Hank Mobley’s“A Slice of the Top”, and Wayne Shorter’s“The Soothsayer” along with all the great Sun Ra recordings. So many contexts to check him out, he always delivers pure emotion, possibilities, life and that mean bite!!! How can you not dig it?
