January is the month that folks are usually hit hard with new prescription drug deductibles; particularly if you have a chronic condition and are taking expensive medications.

If you are on a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan or covered under a Medicare Advantage Plan with Part D benefits, you may want to consider signing up for the new payment program signed into law effective January 1, 2025.

Check out the Medicare.gov website for details. You'll need to contact your Medicare Advantage or Part D insurance company. They can enroll you by phone and set up monthly "installments" by spreading out the cost of your medications over 12 months. They then bill you versus paying for your prescription at the drug store. Your insurer will provide more details.

Happy New Year!

Did you know that Medicare coverage for telehealth services have changed effective January 1, 2025? They have... Prior to January 1st, you could get telehealth services at any location in the U.S. including your home. Starting January 1, 2025, you must be in an office or medical facility located in a rural area (in the U.S.) for most telehealth services. But you can still get certain Medicare telehealth services without being in a rural health care setting, including:

Monthly end stage renal disease (ESRD) visits for dialysis

Services for diagnosis, evaluation, or treatment of symptoms of an acute stroke wherever you are, including a mobile stroke unit

Services for the diagnosis, evaluation, or treatment of a mental and/or behavioral health disorder (including substance use disorder) in your home.

Be sure to check your specific coverage as some Medicare Advantage plans and certain providers in Original Medicare may offer "more" telehealth benefits than the basic coverage in Original Medicare.

What can you do during the Annual Election Period (AEP) for Medicare?

The AEP pertains to Medicare beneficiaries looking to change their current coverage. It takes place every year from October 15th to December 7th. AEP allows you to make the following changes to the way you receive your Medicare benefits:

1. Change from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare.
2. Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.
3. Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan.
4. Join, drop or switch a Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan.

Each option should be carefully evaluated before making a change. Contact me if you have questions.
