In 2004, Laura's mom passed away from cancer. As you can imagine, it was a difficult time in our family's lives. Through the difficulty, music played a significant role in helping comfort and heal us. Specifically, Mark Schultz music made a significant impact on all of our lives.
His music has continued to impact us deeply to this day. If you've never listened to Mark's music, I can't encourage you enough to check him out. In my opinion, he's one of the greatest songwriters/storytellers on the planet.
Laura and I had the opportunity to meet him at an event last fall and that led to me being able to have a conversation with him for the podcast. It was an honor to be able to inform him of the impact he's made on our family's lives and to get to laugh (he's hilarious) and learn from him.

I have seen a lot of new faces here on my page, so I wanted to take a moment to reintroduce myself to those that may not know me!
My name is Doug Smith, I am a proud father of 3 kids, a husband to Laura, the Development Director at Light of Life Rescue Mission, the Founder of L3 Leadership and the host of the L3 Leadership Podcast!
Since 1952, Light of Life has been a place where hope and healing meet for men, women, and families experiencing homelessness, poverty, or addiction. We transform lives through the love of Christ.

We release a new episode every week to help you grow and develop as a leader. You will hear a mix of personal lessons from myself, and conversations I have with world-class leaders from around the world. I have our financial advisor create a report card for us every time we meet. I ask him to grade us in each area of our financial goals on a scale of A to F.
If we don’t have an A in an area, I immediately ask him to give us the steps that we’d need to take to get an A. He then gives us a plan and we go to work on it.
In the beginning of this year, I was praying through my goals and God challenged me to set a goal around generosity. A goal give more than we’ve given in the past.
In my heart, I felt God say, “Doug, you’re so ambitious and intense about getting an A in all of these areas and yet the most important area of finances (giving) you don’t event have a grade or a goal for.
I was inspired by a friend who told me they are “Double Tithers.” They give 20% of their income away.
Rick Warren is a reverse tither, he lives off 10% of his income and gives away 90%.
Inspiring stuff! So, we now have a goal and a vision of where we want our giving to get to.
If you haven’t read Robert Morris’s book, “The Blessed Life.” I encourage you to. It will challenge you to be more generous.
So, when was the last time you were stretched and challenged to be more generous?
Do you have a goal and vision for where you want your giving to get to?
I hope this challenges you as much as it did me! Let’s be generous and make a huge impact on the world through our giving!

As a dad of 3, I’ve now had a few years of experience on my belt when it comes to raising 3 kids under 6.
I want to first be honest & say that we are far from perfect parents, but I do want to share a few things that Laura & I have learned over the years!
Here are a few of our TOP TIPS for raising young kids:
Recognize that You’re a Role Model for Your Kids. Always remember that people do what people see, not what they’re told. Be a good example. Apologize when you mess up. Live a life of integrity. To the best of your ability, live the life you would want your kids to live.
Spend Quality time with your kids Everyday. No matter how busy life gets, we try to make sure we spend quality time with each kid everyday. Even if it’s 15-20 minutes. We also try to schedule one on one dates with each kid on a monthly basis.
Learn from other families. The vast majority of us only had one example of what family “should” look like but it does not have to be that way. Get around other families, ask lots of questions, & read lots of books! We’ve really appreciated learning from Family Teams & Intentional Parenting.
Have Weekly Family Team Meetings. Having a weekly staff meeting with our family calendar & agenda makes us aware of what’s happening that week and who needs to do what. We also try to focus & check-in on every area of our lives to see how we’re doing.
Be Consistent. Have consistent family dinners. Make consistent family memories. Be consistent in the way you discipline. Be consistent in pouring into your kids. Be consistent in taking your kids to church.
Teach Your Children Your Family Values. We made a list of 13 family values that we teach our kids. We try to focus on one value everyday. When we see our kids living out our values, we celebrate that and turn it into another opportunity to teach them values.
Pray with & for your children. Prayer changes everything. We pray together as a family every day before school, before dinner, & before bed. We have the kids pray for us & we pray for them. Laura & I also have a list of prayers that we pray over kids for each day of the week.
What other tips would you add to the list? ⤵️
In 20 years, I am going to be 56 years old.
At 36, I am more Grateful for Life than I ever have been
At 36, I’m focused on Leading my Family Team
At 36, God is giving me something to say
At 36, I’m focused on Listening and Learning from Others Experiences
At 36, I have the opportunity to live out my passion and purpose daily:
At 36, I’m more convinced than ever that consistency compounds
At 36, I’m focused on developing deep friendships
At 36, I’m more convinced than ever that living for God is all that matters.
These next 20 years are absolutely essential in my life for so many reasons but they are not the reasons that you might be thinking.
While everyone else will be chasing money and security, I will be chasing after and fulfilling the call of God in my life.
And you know what is going to happen….
I am either going to look back either with regret for not pursuing my calling OR with fulfillment, knowing that I pursued God’s calling with everything that I have.
I too, hope that you do the same thing as well.
At the end of the day, know matter what you are called to do and your vocation, we are called to lead people and get people into heaven, however we are gifted to do so.
No pressure, but it’s up to you to decide how you are going to get there!
