Professor Flaherty joined the staff yesterday for a crash course in InDesign. We learned about parent pages, picas, bleeds, slugs, and character styles. The best advice she gave us was, when in doubt look around!

Everyone who submitted their work is taking a chance to be vulnerable, and that does not go unseen by The Critical Point staff. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to see you work.

No one said your submissions had to be made specifically for The Critical Point. We don’t have themes or content requirements, so we encourage you to make the most of your assignments. You can submit creative work, or critical work. This means you can submit anything from research essays to sketches.

Every year, dozens of students submit their best writing and art to The Critical Point. Our staff has the tough job of deciding which pieces get published and which ones don’t make the cut.
Before you know it, in just a few months, we’ll be closing submissions and trying to make those difficult decisions. So, we figured we could let you in on the process! For the rest of the semester, Critical Point staff will be letting you in on our favorite tips to give you some insight while you’re crafting your submission.
This week, we advise you to take editing seriously. Take a step back and look at your piece from a different lens, you may be surprised by what you see. Be critical.

Before you know it, it’ll be February and submissions for our 48th edition will be due. What’s our best advice? Don’t wait until then to finish your piece.
It’s usually pretty clear when a piece was workshopped overnight, and very rarely are those the submissions that get published. Besides, we want you to enjoy the process of crafting your submission!
Here are a few writing prompts to get your wheels turning.
