Independent journalist Nick Shirley’s investigation helped expose what federal prosecutors say was a massive fraud scheme involving Minneapolis daycare owner Fahima Mahamud, who is accused of stealing more than $4.6 million in taxpayer money through Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program. Authorities say Mahamud, CEO of Future Leaders Early Learning, submitted thousands of false claims while also receiving roughly $850,000 connected to the infamous “Feeding Our Future” scandal. Prosecutors say she even attempted to flee the country before being stopped.

The bigger question is why states like Minnesota allowed millions in public funds to flow through programs with so little oversight that it took independent reporting and federal investigators to uncover it. Taxpayers deserve accountability, transparency, and safeguards to prevent fraud before millions disappear.
