**It happened in a bathroom in Rome.**

I was wearing a West Virginia University T-shirt, washing my hands, when a woman next to me smiled and said, “You’re from West Virginia? So am I!”

She told me her husband was on faculty at WVU.
“So is mine,” I said, “He’s a psychiatrist and the medical director of the Sydney Banks Innate Health Institute.”

She froze. Took a step back. And then said, “OH NO. You’re part of *that cult!*” And she rushed out the door.

That moment stunned me. All I’d done was mention a university and an institute devoted to human resilience and spiritual understanding. And yet, the reaction was fierce.

I didn’t fully understand it then. I do now.

There are powerful forces—political, cultural, and religious—working to suppress anything that challenges rigid ideologies. But I believe the **true power lies elsewhere**:

In spiritual consciousness.
In intuitive wisdom.
In the quiet, radical clarity of love.

Last week, in my Curves Collective circle, we read from *Embers* by Richard Wagamese and explored what it means to touch life and one another “beneath the surface… where our real stories lie.”

We talked about hope. Forgiveness. The strength to be both soft and fierce in times of upheaval.

This is the work I’m here to do—with women who are ready to live from their deep inner wisdom, even when the world doesn’t understand.
