In 1976, America celebrated its Bicentennial.

I was 20 years old, sitting on a milk crate on Shunk Street in South Philadelphia, changing a tire and spending time with friends in the neighborhood where I grew up.

A year later, I celebrated my 21st birthday at the old 1512 Lounge on Shunk Street with my wife, Betty, and friends who had been part of my life since childhood.

Fast forward fifty years.

As America prepares to celebrate its 250th Anniversary, many of those same friendships are still going strong. Recently, we gathered at the Rosewood in South Philadelphia—men and women who grew up together, attended the same schools, shared the same neighborhoods, and somehow stayed connected through all of life's changes.

Philadelphia has changed.

South Jersey has changed.

The Jersey Shore has changed.

America has changed.

But some friendships last a lifetime.

I wrote a personal reflection about growing up in South Philadelphia during America's Bicentennial and what America's 250th Anniversary means to me today.
