The music of colonial Mexico comes to us in pieces — preserved in cathedral archives and private collections, some of it inaccessible.
What we have tells a story of musical influence moving both ways, to some extent. While subservient to the Western musical forms and music-making taught to them, Indigenous musicians of Mexico still shaped those sounds into something very new, so that the breadth of what we call Renaissance music is not confined to Europe alone.
What remains is music made by real people navigating a complicated world: sacred works, dance-driven pieces, and local traditions. Join us this May 8-12 to hear it live!

Piffaro evokes 15th-century Italy; Marc-André Hamelin plays Liszt This week's offerings on the classical concert scene promise something for every taste and every age.
Music like this once filled the court of Ferrara, where the d’Este family gathered some of the most exciting musicians of the Renaissance. In just a few days, we’ll bring that world to life again with shawms, sackbuts, dulcians, and recorders.
