The Sept. 30 expiration of federal EV tax credits isn’t likely to spark a last-minute buying surge.
Joe McCabe, President & CEO of AutoForecast Solutions LLC notes that most early adopters are already in the market, and the incentives did little to sway mainstream shoppers.
Instead, automakers will need to shoulder more of the cost themselves and rethink production.
Many are shifting toward flexible lines that can build ICE, hybrids, and EVs on the same platforms—giving them the agility to follow consumer demand as it changes.
With regulatory pressure easing and production balance returning, McCabe believes dealers will regain leverage—and move inventory that better matches customer demand.

In today’s Inside Automotive, Joe McCabe, President & CEO of AutoForecast Solutions LLC, shares his outlook on where the market is headed.
McCabe says the USMCA agreement could be a game changer when it comes up for renegotiation in 2026.
He anticipates the Trump administration will push for a stronger emphasis on U.S.-built vehicles, which could squeeze Canada and Mexico.
Global automakers like Hyundai and Toyota have already doubled down on U.S. production to hedge their bets. McCabe believes this marks the start of a long-term shift toward regional self-sufficiency, as political and economic pressures continue to reshape trade policy.
