I'm very excited to be working with Dr. Tukufu Zuberi, Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania on a series of data visualizations about race and migration.
As I begin this project, I stumbled upon these beautiful and ahead-of-their-time infographics about race from Penn researcher, W.E.B. Du Bois.
W. E. B. Du Bois’ Hand-Drawn Infographics of African-American Life (1900) Stunning hand-drawn charts created by Du Bois and his students at Atlanta, condensing an enormous amount of data on African-American life into a set of aesthetically daring and easily digestible visualisations.

And sometimes you win! A few years ago I helped the Advancement Project get the word out about a Civil War-era provision in Virginia's Constitution aimed at disenfranchising African-American voters. This week the governor issued an executive order to overturn that provision. Here is a piece of the infographic I made for the issue. Story of the case in the links!

This visualization gives really puts things in perspective.
"But Slavery was So Long Ago..."
We were commissioned to create a graph tattoo showing a timeline of Slavery of the African Diaspora in the Americas. Because it also details segregation in the US, it didn't make sense to include the full timeline, even though slavery throughout the Caribbean has a much older history.
Here are the pertinent dates we used:
1619: Arrival of "20 and odd" Africans in late August 1619, on an English warship, White Lion.

1865: Slavery abolished in the United States of America.

1954: Supreme Court Declares School Segregation Unconstitutional in Brown v. Board of Education
