American Sewing Guild - Utah Chapter

This Saturday the wait is over. Pauline is presenting on upcycling sweaters in a lecture format with her samples starting at 9:30 at the Salt Lake City Governement Ctr.
Cost if you haven't registered is $20 members and $25 non-members.

National American Sewing Guild is hosting their fall virtual conference this Friday and Satuday offering 6 classes. You can sign up for one or all of them. The videos are going to be available to those that sign up ahead of time for 30 days. https://www.asg.org/resources/conference/

Thursday 9/17 the Ogden group meets at 1pm at the Pleasant Valley Library Branch 5568 S Adams Ogden to make a table runner. For supplies contact [email protected]. The photo is a representation of a table runner but not the pattern they are sewing.

Saturday the fit group is meeting all day from 9am to 4pm at the Salt lake County Government CTR 2001 South state street. Pot luck lunch and bring your own drink.

The Sandy "Sew Inspired NG, is meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 10:00 am to 12:30 at Quilt Etc. Door #3, 16 E Main St, Sandy. Joyce will show us gifts we can make with a fat quarter. The photo is the item she will demonstrate at our meeting on Tuesday.
Necessary Supplies

3/4" Swivel hook w/ D-ring (lobster claw clasp), Split ring, or other desired hardware
6 1/2" x 8 1/2" Piece of fabric
2 1/2" Piece of 1/2"-wide bias tape
Bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies.

Trisha is showing us some stitches so bring your wool projects and practice some stitches with us. Then, we are going to do a quick, fun, wool project that will help you in your sewing arena. No need to bring anything for the project.
So, here is what you will need to bring:

Thursday evening 9/10 the embroidery group is meeting via zoom at 6:30 pm to learn about the technique of embellished borders and corners .

Saturday the garment group is meeting at 10am at the Salt Lake County government center room N3-930 to learn about Linings, Underlinings and Interlinings.

Then we'll have each of you share your experiences with online fabric companies:
Be prepared to share information about prices, customer service,
quality of fabrics, selection, website, ordering addresses, etc.

Plan to also share information about other
online sewing related companies that you have used.

If you've used online sources for your sewing needs,
come prepared to share your experiences;
but if not, come prepared to learn and ask questions.
(You'll probably want to take notes!)

ReNae has made copies for everyone from 3 different sewing companies on their recommendations of online fabric shopping places available in the United States.

Tuesday 9/1 the vintage sewing machine group is meeting at Quilts etc. 11 East Main St. Door #3 Sandy at 10:30 to continue work on their Sit n Stow. Sarah will be completing the instructions.
The Orem group is meeting on Thursday, Sept 3 at 10:30am. We will meet at the Springville Museum of Art (126 E 400 S, Springville, UT) to view the 52nd Annual Quilt Show. There are some amazing quilts.
Please let Marilyn know that you are coming so that we can wait inside the door and then go look at the quilts together.

Several meetings this week.
The Orem group and the Sandy group are meeting together at Tonya's to learn the art of Kumihimo braiding. Tuesday August 18. Meet at 10:30 to carpool to Tonya's, pot luck lunch.
Carolyn will teach this Japanese braiding technique using a foam disk. The groups will learn the basic steps by creating a two colored spiral cord on a lobster clasp, ~ 4 inches long . T

The Ogden group is meeting in the Board Room at the Pleasant Valley Library, 5568 S Adams Ogden (S Ogden). We have the room from 1-3 pm.

We will be making the Nordic stars table runner and the class will be led by Tamra. Cutting mats, iron and ironing mat will be provided.

The West Valley Sew it Seams Neighborhood Group is meeting Tuesday August 11 at 6:30 p.m., Taylorsville Library - 4870 South 2700 West. This month we'll "SEW WITH DENIM". Susan is asking you to be creative and make something you've never made before. We'll "sew and tell" and share our creations. If there is a pattern, please share it too.

Please bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies to our next session.

For each ice cream cozy you plan to make, you will need to prepare the following materials:

- Two pieces of fabric (minimum of 9.5'' square, ideally non-directional small prints)
- Two squares of cotton/poly batting (same size as your fabric)
- Matching thread
- A removable marking pen or chalk.

Saturday 8/8, the Garment group is meeting at the SLCO Government Ctr., 2001 South State, Room N3-930 at 10am
The Technique of the Month will be Determining Fiber Content by Kathryn.
Our program is to tissue fit our pants! We chose S9923 for the pattern we wanted to make. But feel free to chose any pattern you like. Choose your size by your hip measurement. If between sizes, please choose the larger size.

If you are comfortable preparing your pattern, to save time, please do so: Start by checking seam allowances. If possible, make side seams, inseams and waist seams 1" to give us a little extra in case we need it! Trim the pattern pieces on your size (after adding to the seam allowances) and mark all the seam lines. Then pin the front to the back on the seam lines, with pins pointing down! (You can wear tights if you are uncomfortable being fitted in your underwear.)

Note: you requested that we do a program on online fabric sources, so we'll do that in September, along with a discussion on linings, underlining, and interlining.
