In the design of a car or truck, it is the transmission that transmits power from the engine to the wheels. Indeed, the transmission controls the revolutions of the crankshaft, keeping it reasonable and making it so that the interlocking gears can work properly.
Engage your senses when checking the transmission fluid. If it is dirty, darkly colored, or smells acrid or burnt, it needs replacing. Transmission fluid in good condition smells slightly sweet, is red, and is clear.
It is a common belief that manual transmission offers improved performance and more control for drivers. While it does make sense, today’s automatic transmissions are closing the performance gap.
So it should come to no surprise that the transmission is very important to the car, but what about the other pieces or the ensemble? Well with the transmission being one of the most important parts of the car, there are up to 30,000 parts that make up your average car.
Although it is not the only reason, most transmission problems can be traced to overheating, which burns the fluid and diminishes its lubricating capacity. We advise against driving in stop and go traffic in extreme heat, towing very heavy loads, or rocking your car in snow.
The fluid in your automatic transmission does more than just lubricate the gears. This same fluid is pumped around to various components to engage or disengage them. It’s even used as a power transfer media in the torque converter to get the power into the transmission.
These days, even the fastest cars come with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. In fact, cool and fast cars like the 2014 Corvette Stingray and 2014 Porsche 911 come with a choice of either transmission, depending on the driver’s preference.
If you have trouble shifting through the gears after having your automatic transmission fluid changed, it could be that the service stirred up contamination in the transmission. We suggest you contact the service center and ask if there were metal shavings in the fluid pan.
For years, transmissions were either manual or automatic, but new shifters (such as sports sticks) are a cross between them. These transmissions are more complicated, but don’t worry. A transmission expert will be able to keep them in good repair.
Do you think transmission fluid should always be bright red? Well, this is not necessarily the case always. The latest transmission fluids are bright red due to a dye additive. They normally turn a brownish-red color because of heat.
Depending on your car, transmission troubles might produce a variety of different sounds, such as a buzzing, whirring, or humming. Either way, it will probably be a sound that’s not normal for your engine, so make sure to get your transmission checked.
While all automobile transmissions perform the same function, their structure and assemblage vary slightly among manufacturers. Because our technicians are trained on all makes and models, we will be able to handle any problems that arise.
