Great class today! I love to feature herbs in the spring esp when we're all eagerly awaiting our garden produce.

So much you can do with herbs, from punching up your culinary dishes to treating a cold to calming the nerves. Thanks again to Griffin Hospital for making this amazing space available for these community classes!

Happy World Bee Day! Did you know that Bumblebees (those big fuzzy bodies hovering around your deck) transport WAY more pollen than your average honey bee, thanks to their large surface area and ability to 'shake' flowers and use their entire bodies to transmit pollen.

That doesn't mean that the other 300+ native bee species across CT aren't just as important.

Consider planting pollinator attracting plants (often low maintenance natives) to your landscape and putting out a 'bee hotel' to give them an alternate place to nest rather than in your wood and garden grounds.

Grateful for meaningful ways the CT legislature made up for loss of Federal funding during the recent legislative session.

Spring herbs, y'all! Getting excited for next week's class on utilizing spring herbs -both cultivated and wild.

It's hard to imagine that 10 years ago I didn't even know about nettle. But if you think dandelions and kale are great, you've got to get some nettle.

Nettle can be eaten, steeped and preserves in a tincture (as in here) and bolsters your immune system, detoxes liver, reduces inflammation and fights allergies.

Lin in bio for Griffin Health classes, all FREE thanks to 's commitment to proactive health maintenance.

Take advantage of plants already thriving in your yard to fill in spaces. This is also a great time to ask neighbors for plants they have they are also cutting back or dividing.

All can be done esp in New England while we're eagerly waiting to get our heat loving veggies and annuals in the ground!

Join me at one of the NINE for workshops this season!

Find Serenity and Good Health in the Garden

In recognition of Women’s Health Month, the Griffin Center for Healthy Living Teaching Kitchen will host a free cooking demonstration about the nutritional and stress-relieving benefits of common garden herbs.

Garden Calm & Herbal Stress Relief will be Thurs., May 21 at 5 p.m. at The Griffin Center for Healthy Living at Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road, Oxford.

Former Executive Director of Massaro Farm and sustainable nutrition expert Caty Poole will discuss spring herbs and how they can be combined into teas and tinctures that can lower blood pressure, detox the liver, help control blood sugar, and contribute to overall stress relief and a person’s level of calm. Poole will demonstrate how to make a simple tea blend, and all participants will receive an herbal tincture that can help relieve stress and promote calm.

Space is limited for this event, so registration is required. Visit www.griffinhealth.org/garden-calm or call The Griffin Center for Healthy Living Coordinator at 203-732-1369 to sign up.
