I remember very vividly a day back in 97 or 98 when a commercial for The Ozzman Cometh compilation came on TV. It played bits and pieces of various classics with an image of a golden cross getting closer and closer to the screen. It had my attention and little did I know how much a fleeting moment like this would impact and change the trajectory of my life forever. I had then seen it a few times after and decided to convince my mom to buy it for me at a Walmart of all places.

Furthermore, I started chiseling away at her and decided that I could probably sell her on the cassette tape ($10) because it was half the price or a CD. I was 11 or 12 at the time and of course had no money but she finally caved. I’ll never forget popping it into my brother’s stereo (I had nothing of the sort yet) and being admittedly terrified by the rehearsal of the song Black Sabbath that opened up the album but I kept going back for more. I still get goosebumps thinking about the first time I heard songs like Mr. Crowley just being absolutely mesmerized by the guitar playing.

I would frequently ditch my friends in the middle of skateboarding to go home and listen to that tape. I shortly after got the Randy Rhoads Tribute CD then eventually begged for a guitar. This story if hardly unique as my entire social media feed is filled with similar stories. There are of course the crowd who scoff at people for mourning the loss of someone they didn’t know personally. The truth of the matter is that Ozzy’s body of work impacted my life so immensely and more than the majority of people I’ve known ever could. We all knew the day would come but that doesn’t make it any easier to process.
