The place command is a fantastic skill to regulate your dogs excitement and when you add duration, the magic of conditioned relaxation happens. It’s perfect for some impulse control when playing games and controlling excitement or reactions. Send them to their place to settle before releasing them once they’ve calmed down!

Some of the quietest moments in dog training are the ones that mean the most.
Barkely and I are taking one of our last handful of walks together before he goes home. Over the past weeks we’ve built routines, worked through challenges, and created a language that helps him understand the world a little more clearly.
One thing people don’t always see about board & train programs is the bond that forms during this time. When a dog lives, trains, and learns with you every day, you can’t help but build a connection with them. Watching their confidence grow and seeing the pieces start to click is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
But just as meaningful is the trust from the owners. Inviting someone to work with your dog, to help bridge the gap between where things are and where you want them to be, takes a lot of trust, and I never take that lightly.
Now the best part happens: he goes home with new skills, clearer communication, and an owner ready to keep building on everything we started together.
Grateful for the dogs who teach me as much as I teach them, and for the people who trust me with them. 🐾

She’s not being ‘bad.’ She’s being a cattle dog.
Some breeds are genetically wired to monitor and protect their environment. That instinct isn’t the problem.
The real question is, can you call them off?
Can they disengage when asked?
Can they regulate themselves?
Or are they running the perimeter because no one has defined the job?
When we zoom out, window watching is rarely the only behavior happening. It often connects to leash reactivity, door rushing, fence fighting, or overall anxiety.
Instinct + no leadership = chaos.
Instinct + structure = control.
Your dog doesn’t need less drive.
They need clarity. ✨
Dogs hear “no” all day long.
No biting.
No chasing.
No herding the cats (or kids or adults lol)
No being a menace to society.
But here’s the part we miss: it’s a lot easier for a dog to say no to bad choices when they have good choices they’re allowed to say yes to.
Clarity + fulfillment = a calmer, more stable dog.
For cattle dogs (and other mouthy, high-drive dogs), their biology matters. They’re supposed to use their mouth. They’re supposed to chase. They’re supposed to engage and work.
So instead of just suppressing those instincts, we channel them:
• Tug games
• Chasing games
• herding games
• Structured play with rules
When a dog gets to satisfy their drives in appropriate ways, they stop trying to satisfy them in inappropriate ways.
Behavior isn’t about “don’t do this.”
It’s about “here’s what you CAN do instead.”
A fulfilled dog is a good dog.
A confused, underworked dog is… creative. 😅
