Ilia Malinin made incredible history at the 2026 Winter Olympics by landing the first legal one-foot backflip on Olympic ice, thrilling fans and helping Team USA.

At the same time, full credit belongs to trailblazer Surya Bonaly, a Black French figure skater who pioneered the one-foot backflip at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. She boldly landed it on one blade despite the rule against it, receiving a penalty but forever etching her name in skating history as the move's original innovator shine after the International Skating Union lifted the long-standing ban on backflips in 2024.

Both athletes deserve huge congratulations for pushing boundaries and inspiring the next generation. Their achievements highlight how courage and talent evolve sports, celebrate them both!
