According to American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines, you should never perform a blind finger sweep on a choking victim, as it can push the object deeper into the airway. Only remove an object from the mouth if it is clearly visible.

🫀Vivien Theodore Thomas played a major role in developing a procedure now called the Blalock–Thomas–Taussig shunt used to treat blue baby syndrome.
🫀During the first human “blue baby” surgery in 1944, which successfully saved 15-month-old Eileen Saxon, Thomas stood on a step stool behind Blalock to guide him through the procedure. The procedure connects a systemic artery (usually the subclavian) to the pulmonary artery, increasing blood flow to the lungs in newborns with cyanotic heart defects.
🫀In 1976, Johns Hopkins University honored him with an honorary doctorate and appointed him an Instructor of Surgery, allowing him to be formally recognized as “Dr. Thomas”.
Dr. Edward S. Cooper was an emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the first African American president of the American Heart Association.
