As we continue sharing highlights from our China tour this Lunar New Year week, we’re reflecting on a special chamber music performance in Tianjin, a city deeply connected to Philadelphia as its sister city for 45 years 🤝

Fourteen of our musicians traveled to Tianjin to perform a program featuring Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds, Cello, and Bass and Mozart’s Gran Partita - program lead by our assistant conductor Naomi Woo

Our civic and cultural ties were also celebrated. Lauren Swartz, President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, joined our President and CEO Matías Tarnopolsky in meeting with Tianjin officials, including Zhang Ling, Vice Mayor of Tianjin. These meaningful connections strengthen the enduring bond between our cities.

Following the performance, we were honored to meet Huang Chunyan, Vice Chair of the Tianjin People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, whose presence highlighted the importance of cultural and diplomatic exchange.

Continuing our Philadelphia Orchestra China Tour series 🇨🇳

With the start of the Lunar New Year 🧧 we’re taking this moment to look back at our unforgettable tour of China, sharing highlights from our concerts throughout the week.

We performed our third concert of the tour at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing with our principal guest conductor Marin Alsop.

The program featured excerpts from the iSing! International Festival’s Echoes of Ancient Tang Poems, a beautiful cross-cultural project that brings together young composers and singers from around the world. The evening also included the world premiere of Spring River Flowers by Moonlight by Mason Bates, a setting of a classic Tang dynasty poem, co-commissioned by The Philadelphia Orchestra, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, and the China International Culture Association.

Adding to the significance of this special evening, we were honored to welcome the U.S. Ambassador to China, whose presence made the occasion even more memorable ♥️🇺🇸

Earlier this year, we also marked the Lunar New Year in Philadelphia with a special concert conducted by our Assistant Conductor Naomi Woo, featuring a similar program.
