'Tis the season for this repost - this is still a major problem in the salon industry.

One thing we come across a lot in the salon industry is a discrepancy in how to pay stylists. (There's no such thing as a "1099 commissioned employee".)

We see a number of stylists who are being given hours, set pricing, being treated as an employee (some providing their own color), and being paid a commission with no taxes being withheld - only to receive a 1099 at year end from their salon owner (which can cause the owner to be under investigation for tax evasion and wage theft).

Here are some main points to help you determine the difference between classifications in the beauty industry so you don't inadvertently make a very costly mistake.

Here is a very common question - How much do we charge?

Well, we only charge you what you need. No inventory? You won't pay for inventory entries. Only have a couple bank accounts, no loans, and a credit card? You'll be paying less monthly than someone with 6 bank accounts, a loan, and 4 credit cards.

Our pricing is based on scope of work. We don't charge hourly for monthly or quarterly bookeeping - we give you a package price. PA business owners - new report filing requirement -

"Pennsylvania Business Owners: You must file an annual report starting in 2025. Know the requirements and deadlines.

Your filing window is based on your entity type:
• Corporations: Jan. 1 - June 30
• Limited Liability Companies: Jan. 1 - Sept. 30
• All Others: Jan. 1 - Dec. 31

The Department of State will notify entities via email (if provided) and postcard before the deadlines. Be sure your email is up to date."
