We are proud to announce that Dr. Kwame Owusu-Daaku, of The University of West Florida, has been selected to participate in one of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s leadership programs.

These programs connect changemakers across the country—from every profession and field—to learn from and work with one another in creating more just and thriving communities.

Specifically, Dr. Owusu-Daaku was selected for Interdisciplinary Research Leaders. Designed for teams of one community partner and two research partners, Interdisciplinary Research Leaders supports teams as they work with their communities to design and conduct rigorous research to explore critical issues, then apply the findings in real time to advance health and equity.

As a member of the program’s newest cohort, Dr. Owusu-Daaku and his teammates will focus on structural racism in the community of North Port St. Joe (NPSJ), Florida by assessing whether intentional, authentic, and sustained engagement between NPSJ and the City of Port St. Joe and other stakeholders, in a facilitated and exploratory environment, can improve previously strained relationships, expose and address structural racism, and start to develop trust to catalyze health equity? They intend to conduct the assessment through the use of transformative scenario planning (TSP) - a process that brings together a group of diverse, and influential actors, often too polarized in their positions to commit to collective action. The Dr. Faeza Rashid Kazmier STEM Scholarship Endowment will benefit first generation in college and female students in UWF’s Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering.

UWF Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) graduate Tyler Mitchell (pictured below) led this study, which included UWF Professor Jason Ortegren in EES and was published today in the journal Meteorology. The results indicate that although the southeastern USA warmed significantly over the last 50 years, there is no evidence that the warming was caused in part by decreases in summertime cool weather occurrences. By all of our selected measures, summertime cool-air incursions have remained stable since 1970. Other aspects of seasonal weather must be responsible for the regional warming trend.

a master of science in biology.

i am exhausted. the pressure of navigating your early 20’s coupled with academic and professional responsibilities has been isolating and disheartening at times. i have sat in so many classrooms over the last 6 years feeling like an imposter. i’ve left exams and labs wondering if this is worth the sacrifices, am i smart enough, is my research substantial enough, do i deserve to be here?

what i do know is that i love science. i’ve never been good at sports, my art are the likes of someone learning to hold a pencil for the first time, and the only instrument i have ever made a sound come out of was a trumpet in 6th grade. i never felt the ‘aha’ moment until i stood in a research lab for the first time in the summer of 2018. while i certainly wasn’t a natural, i knew i wanted more.

i now stand as a 23 year old woman, a first generation college graduate, and a molecular biologist with two degrees. this field and this degree has given me a sense of pride i could have never imagined and has humbled me over and over and over. i thank every peer, every mentor, and every friend who has helped me understand that i have always deserved to be in every room i have ever stood in and every accolade received.

i look forward to new passions, more triumphs, and even greater hardships.
