The recent turmoil with Twitter has prompted many online disabled people to think more deeply about what they really need and want from social media platforms.
Anxiety and debate over the direction of Twitter under Elon Musk’s ownership is affecting nearly every corner of Twitter, and of all online communities. Users and business partners wonder about Musk’s ability to manage the company and the application itself with a drastically reduced staff pushed to its limits. And many inside and outside Twitter’s user base worry about whether Musk's purported “free speech absolutist” approach will make Twitter even more toxic than it has sometimes been in the past. Will Twitter become a liberating bastion of free expression? Or, as a recent Vox.com article suggests it might, will it devolve into "an even more intense cesspool of negative content than it already is?”
1. Accessibility
This should be an obvious and easily understood requirement. But it’s worth explaining and underlining. Disabled people need social media Interfaces that people with any kind of disability can use with relative ease.
2. Community
At their best, social media platforms can be places where people with disabilities can readily find information and other like-minded disabled people, unfettered by geography or the need for physical exertion to find them.
3. Emotional safety
This should also go without saying, but bears repeating. Disabled people want social media to be as free as possible from abuse and bullying.
4. Emotional sustainability
Disabled people online want to be challenged, stimulated, and engaged. But on some platforms they often find themselves bogged down by a flood of pestering and annoyances.
5. Visibility
One of the best things about Twitter has been that disabled people were able to meet, share, vent, and organize as distinct communities, but in plain sight of influential people outside the disability community.

Deaf Santa’s extra busy this holiday season, so he’s inviting good boys and girls to join him in his workshop by videophone to tell him what’s on their wish list.
But children don’t need to go all the way to the North Pole! Use this handy calendar to schedule a time to talk to Santa.
Just click on December 12th or December 14th to snag a time slot to call the big guy on your videophone or ntouch app to make sure he knows what they’re hoping for under the tree.

Be a part of making a difference in the community - support CIL of Northwest Florida on Giving Tuesday!
Help community members like Jay're (pictured below) to experience assistive technology. The digital video device that he is trying is part of a device loan program.
Assistive Technology can be very expensive and cost prohibitive. Through CILNWF/FAAST "try-before-you-buy" device loan program, individuals are able to use items like the magnifier shown in the photo below to see if it is effective for their particular need, before making a decision to purchase.
Support the CILNWF mission to promote, educate, facilitate, assist and advocate with and on behalf of people with disabilities, in partnership with their communities, to achieve their goals for independence. Donate today!

Life sometimes gets overwhelming, and at times you need to know you are not alone.
Here is a story about a caller in that position, "inches" from the edge:
A caller to our Florida Veterans Support Line (FVSL) was in a rough spot. Family issues left him living in his truck and alone. He was feeling depressed and overwhelmed.
The Veteran Care Coordinator (VCC) who answered the phone let the Army Veteran on the other line know he was not alone. He could share his feelings in a safe space while the VCC worked to find resources like food, clothes, gas, and counseling...

As Hurricane Idalia affects Florida, we have people who are wondering how to help our neighbors.
If you want to help out, check out the United Way of Florida's Disaster Recovery Fund at https://www.uwof.org/disaster-recovery-fund.
At this time, cash donations are the best way to help out.

⛈ 8/28 TROPICAL STORM IDALIA UPDATE:
Tropical Storm is forecasted to become a major hurricane impacting Florida's coast. Fortunately, Escambia County remains out of the path of the storm, although wind and rain are still possible.
Potential Threats: No local impacts are expected today. Confidence continues to increase in a high risk for deadly rip currents and high surf beginning late Tuesday and persisting through at least Thursday.
Confidence: Confidence in the forecast track has increased; however, there is still some potential for shifts in the forecast track. We will continue to closely monitor Idalia for additional impacts.
‼️ This is a reminder to be during hurricane season ‼️
