Today is a historical day for su***de prevention and mental health in the U.S.! The National Su***de Prevention Lifeline, now known as the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, can be more easily reached by calling or texting 988, or chatting on 988lifeline.org.
988 serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the U.S., you can easily access 24/7 emotional support. You do not have to be suicidal to reach out. Our trained crisis counselors can help you through whatever mental health challenges you are experiencing.
We're so grateful to SAMHSA, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Federal Communications Commission, and our other su***de prevention and mental health partners in the field for working together to get us here, and we look forward to growing and expanding our services and supports in the years to come.

Hey there! the etsy shop is on indefinite vacation mode.
Take it easy out there, y'all.
Check my linktr.ee/nkbowman in the bio to see what I'm actually up to.

If anyone can tell me why vintage sleeves are so short, I'd love the trivia! π§₯
This was my grandmother's corduroy jacket that I've not been able to enjoy for the past decade because the sleeves expose my wrists.
Several years ago, Ryan and I converted his red corduroy pants (see #4) into shorts, so I used the scraps to make two 2 inch panels to add to the sleeves after detaching the stretchy knit wrist piece. I preserved the inner stuffing and carefully hand- and machine-stitched it back together yesterday.

Take these slow, quiet winter days to focus on the quiet tide of mending, gathering, and resting.

Depending on how you know me, you may remember a fresh-faced 20something who picked up the uke and never become proficient.
I crocheted a strap this week in hopes of making time to be imperfect.

Made a cute Nature Bag for a toddler friend! The yellow is from the dress I wore when we got engaged 9 years ago this week!

Yesterday's projects:
1. Business card carrier from faux leather boots that started falling apart
2. Reverse tie-dye with bleach (my first time!)
3. Mending kitchen towels

Embracing this weird mending not-pattern with the only embroidery thread that was in my mending kit. This was my first canvas tote from about 2005.

Happy Mother's Day!
Hope you found time for you today π§΅

I've had these shoes for about 4 years and want to keep them usable for as long as possible. Some bare spots and gross stains were replaced by weaving and avant garde flowers!

Seeing what something could become then making it happen is so gratifying!
Found this beach coverup while thrifting and knew its awkward shape could be remade for my body.

𧡠Gave a much-needed refresh with to this cardigan that I've had for about a decade!

Pleased with my alterations to this one of a kind handmade item from SaturnCollection!

Now that I'm back crocheting again (knitting is no-go, as well as heavy weight yarn), I whipped up this delightfully obnoxious granny square hat to round out 2020.
What's your favorite thing you made for yourself this year?

Meet Woebot!
Feeling like you need extra support but:
β don't want to feel like a burden to anyone
β don't have the option of therapy (time, funds, flexibility)
β think your struggles "aren't that bad"
There are FREE chatbots that have been studied and show great potential to help! My favorite is Woebot. Feels like a really supportive friend who texts you right when you need it. Lemme know if you try it!

Meet Woebot! Woebot is ready to listen, 24/7. No couches, no meds, no childhood stuff. Just strategies to improve your mood. And the occasional dorky joke.

I want to give a shout out to the amazing artist and musician who made this pouch that I use for my crochet hooks: Whitethorn Studio
Also, here is the second hat I've made for my toddler this month using faux knit stitch!

Why is access to therapy so expensive and near impossible. In many countries in the Middle East itβs near impossible to even have a therapist not only because of stigma but also because there are so limited number of doctors available. Access to mental health support and doctors should be a universal right. -Hawzhin

This bears repeating right now. The layers are many. Thanks to the insightful and talented for the use of their art.

Are you okay?
Seriously, this is something I really, really, REALLY want to talk to you about. Please tell me.
It's okay if the answer is yes and it's okay if the answer is no, but I feel like we need the conversation.
I was reading a piece in that talks about the psychological impact of quarantine, and I think it also relates to distancing and isolation.
This experience can lead to issues like trauma, confusion, anger, dread, anxiety, depression.
And this part was really interesting.
"Psychological health in times of crisis is like a wrestling magic."
That's exactly how I've felt lately. Like I'm constantly wrestling with the way my mind is feeling & my body is feeling. What I want to do and what I feel like I should do don't add up. Nothing ever seems to quite be enough, even though I'm the only person in the ring. I'm wrestling somehow.
The article says "The situation throws stressors at you. The question is whether your coping mechanisms are strong enough to overcome them."
I've been talking on my stories about coping mechanisms, and yesterday's was talking to people you trust.
You are my people, and I hope I'm one of yours. So let's talk.
πAre you okay? How are you coping? What support do you need?π

Times are weird, but the little things are nice. Like seeing your toddler play with you made for them a year ago β‘

I made all this!
.

One year makes such a difference!
This past week, I used my my shrink side to start the Emerald Coast Perinatal Collective, a project to link agencies/groups together to improve the care of women like me. β‘
Today I hosted my first Stitch 'N Brunch in quite some time. It was so nice to pick up crocheting again with some pre-baby friends ππ₯β

Creating a new way for me to use my shrink title!
A theme I have come to recognize in my personal and professional life is making things that fill holes in the community. Details coming soon!

Our Story
Crafting and decreasing mental health stigma since 2009.
Hi, I'm the Stitching Shrink! I have been crafting for most of my life and my etsy shop has existed in a few other forms. I recently created and sold items at a local art sale and felt refreshed and no longer like an imposter. I am a clinical social worker by day and a stitcher... all the rest of the time. I create using cross-stitch, embroidery, knitting and crochet with a few curses here and there. My personal favorites have come from my recent discovery of amigurumi. Keep an eye out for more physical products in this shop alongside the constant array of cross-stitch patterns.
