Today Katie White (CFNWF Vice Chair) and I presented the Dream Builder Endowed Scholarship Fund, honoring the U.S.S. Indianapolis & Hunter Scott check to the scholarship recipient, Amy Zhang, PHS IB rising Sophomore student. We met Amy today and she’s truly precious and absolutely loved doing the essay about the importance of the events surrounding the U.S.S. Indianapolis. She loved it so much that she asked to give back some of her $1,000 scholarship to continue the Dream Builder Endowed Scholarship Fund because she truly sees the value in it and wants it to continue, I almost cried! She donated $100 back to the Dream Builder fund. Many thanks to Amy Zhang for her commitment to keep history alive! Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Congress recently passed legislation retroactively extending the charitable IRA rollover for 2015 and making the provision permanent for future years.
Here's what you should know:
• If you are 70½ or older, you can roll over up to $100,000 from traditional or Roth IRAs to qualified charities, such as The Community Foundation of Northwest Florida.
• Your gift will count against your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.
• Your gift must be received by us on or before December 31 to qualify for this tax year.
We urge you to contact your financial advisor today to find how this may be an advantage for you and your philanthropic giving!

▪Cash
▪Appreciated Securities
▪Real Estate
▪Life Insurance
▪IRAs and Other Qualified Retirement Plans/Funds
▪Closely-Held Stock
▪Bequests and Trusts
▪Convert a Private Foundation

Keep the Community Foundation of Northwest Florida part of your end of year tax planning. With a minimum amount of $5,000 you can open a Donor Advised Fund by making charitable donations, so consider donating highly appreciated stock or other assets rather than cash. This strategy is particularly effective if you own appreciated stock you’d like to sell but you don’t have any losses to offset the gains. Donating stock to charities, including CFNWF, allows you to dispose of the stock without triggering capital gains taxes, while still claiming a charitable deduction. You may then make your charitable gifts at the pace you wish during the following year(s) by simply notifying our office and we will do the rest. Call 850.434.5890 with your questions.

Donor advised funds (DAFs) are a unique philanthropic tool that allow donors to establish charitable accounts at institutions, such as community foundations, and remain involved in supporting the issues and causes they care about. When a DAF is established, donors relinquish personal control of the funds to the community foundation, which then oversee and manage these funds on behalf of the families, groups, or individual donors. All funds distributed from these DAFs must be used for qualified, charitable purposes, and community foundations often have the discretion to direct DAF funds toward the most pressing issues in their communities.

Presently, the endowment offers one $1,000 scholarship which is part of the program at Pensacola High School, in conjunction with the IB Program. As the fund grows, CFNWF can offer more scholarships. The Goodall Family Charitable Foundation gave the endowment to the Community Foundation of Northwest Florida to administer. We look forward to working with PHS, Michael Jones, Jane Goodall and Hunter Scott to determine who the recipient will be for the 1st DreamBuilder Scholarship honoring the USS Indianapolis & Hunter Scott.
