Active Minds is a national non-profit organization that promotes awareness and reduces the stigmatiz Active Minds, Inc.
We are a student organization and UWF's chapter of the national nonprofit organization Active Minds, which works to decrease the stigma surrounding mental illness and prevent su***de on college campuses. was founded in 2003, by Alison Malmon when her brother Brian died by su***de after struggling with mental illness in silence. Saturday, November 20th is International Survivors of Su***de Loss Day. We want to spread love to those affected by su***de. In commemoration of those whose loved ones were lost to su***de, Active Minds UWF will be tabling Thursday, November 17th from 10-2pm outside the Pace Library with resources, stress-less supplies, and a remembrance board. For those wondering, we will not be having a walk for Seeds of Hope this academic year but instead will be tabling. 💚 ***deloss

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence:
- On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.
- 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experience severe intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner contact s*xual violence, and/or intimate partner stalking with impacts such as injury, fearfulness, post-traumatic stress disorder, use of victim services, contraction of s*xually transmitted diseases, etc.
- Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime.
If you or someone you know is being abused, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY) now.

The Florida State University College of Medicine has invited us to attend their second annual virtual Mental Health Awareness Week!
Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) is a week-long series of events created to raise awareness about mental health illnesses and the populations that may be impacted by them.
This year, they are kicking off the week with keynote speaker Kevin Hines. Mr. Hines is a well-known su***de prevention speaker. He has reached the hearts of millions traveling the world and sharing his story of jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge in attempted su***de. Join us Monday, September 20th at 7pm (EST) to listen to him share his story and to kick off MHAW 2021.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day. According to the Active Minds National Organization, su***de is the second leading cause of death among young adults. As an Active Minds chapter, the goal of our organization is to advocate for su***de prevention, and join in the fight of breaking down the stigma around talking about su***de and mental health.
