➡️Monica has championed environmental justice and community revitalization in North Port St. Joe, a neighborhood in Gulf County, Florida burdened by socioeconomic disinvestment and pollution from a now defunct paper mill. Through community research and advocacy, Monica has amplified resident voices and catalyzed change. Her community-based scholarship exemplifies UWF’s commitment to community-engaged experiential learning.

➡️Founded in 2001, Aylstock, Witkin, Kreis & Overholtz, PLLC has represented over 250,000 clients across the country and have recovered over two billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for their clients. They have also provided extensive community support through the Aylstock, Witkin, Kreis & Overholtz Justice Foundation. The foundation has raised over $185,000 in scholarships for local high school students, has served more than 13,500 healthy meals and snacks to children and has taught over 4,500 local children about healthy nutrition.

➡️ Congratulations to Sandra Donaldson on receiving the 2023 Public Service and Education Award. Sandra is dedicated to serving marginalized populations through health outreach and advocacy. In 2022, she partnered with UWF, Ascension, and Community Health Northwest Florida on a 3-year HRSA grant designed to provide training to Community Health Workers in the area. This training focused on the skill sets and population health competencies needed for effective community outreach, building trust within communities, and providing health and wellness support resources. Sandra’s impact affirming health equity in our community reflects our shared commitment to empowering communities.

➡️Hong is committed to providing support for healthcare solutions through her current position with Florida Blue and her past work at Andrews Research Institute and Baptist Health Care. Hong was instrumental in bringing the first Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation care team to Baptist Hospital. ECMO provides short-term support for patients with severe conditions such as severe pneumonia, influenza, massive heart attack or massive pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs).Hong serves on numerous local boards and committees, including University of West Florida Foundation, Mental Health Taskforce, Covenant Care Foundation, Junior Achievement of Northwest Florida and the Development Review Board for the City of Gulf Breeze.

Our first winner for The Alumni Community Spirit Award is Chris Roney.
➡️While Chris was a UWF student, he and his late business partner, Charles Stead, started a business unlocking cars for students. While this was a way to generate some spending money and provide a service for UWF students, this “pizza hut dorm born” enterprise would become something much bigger. Fast forward 25 years and Ace Unlocks now employs more than 20 individuals and serves Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties. Chris also gives of his time outside of work and has served on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida board for 10 years including serving as board chair.

➡️MiChele serves as the Senior Program Manager for the Mentor Protégé Program for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. This program assists eligible small businesses in developing their qualifications and improving their ability to compete for prime contract and subcontract awards by partnering with large businesses. Her leadership as the chair of the agency’s Women’s Employee Resource Group and member of the Diversity Council provided her the platform to advocate for various programs that support African Americans and underserved individuals with a focus on women.

Our first winner for The Alumni Inclusion Award is Dr. Michael F. Summers.
➡️ Dr. Summers’ work for the last 30 years has centered on mentoring, empowering communities marginalized in STEM fields, and diversifying the national body of scientists. Dr. Summers has been recognized nationally with numerous awards, including the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and the White House Presidential Award for Science Mentoring. He has mentored more than 325 undergraduate students, 60 graduate students and many early career colleagues/faculty.

Alumni and community members are invited to the free No Defense PFAS Symposium on October 25-26 at the UWF campus. Through the symposium, presenters and partners seek to raise awareness of how PFAS impacts the Pensacola Community and empower citizens to protect themselves and the environment. PFAS (per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances) is a “forever chemical” found in many commonly used products. These products include firefighting foam, Teflon (TM), water-resistant fabrics such as rain jackets, personal care products such as cosmetics, dental floss and shampoo and stain-resistant coatings used on fabrics. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, these chemicals “are found in water, air, fish and soil locations across the nation and the globe.

➡️Though his career goal was emergency management, Kali still made it his mission to aid and develop the community around him and the future leaders of the world. Focusing on public speaking and leadership development, Kali quickly became a Head Instructor at Iron Sharpen, a private leadership academy in Pensacola in 2017. Kali also became a Program Director at the Boys & Girls Club of America in Pensacola in 2017.Kali also went on to become the founder of a firm, Kali Speaks, that is focused on consulting, public speaking, personal development, growth and successful planning.

➡️ Congratulations to Adelin Gasana on receiving the 2023 Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Adelin’s work experience includes credits in broadcast TV news and independent films.His talent and leadership reflected in "Bo Legs: Marvin Arrington, Sr., An Atlanta Story,” elevated this independent documentary film to award-winning status. The film went on the film festival circuit--screening at ten different festivals and culminated with a 6-month airing on Delta Airlines In-Flight Entertainment, helping the film reach a global audience.

➡️Bill’s public service career includes 18 years as an administrator for California State University, Chico and 17 years as an administrator in local governments primarily as a City Manager and in Human Resources. Bill's accomplishments include desegregation work for the City of Pensacola, developing a farm worker pesticide safety study for the State of California, developing the affirmative action program for 3 California cities, negotiating a free bus pass program for university students as part of a alternative transportation program, and establishing 2 scholarships at Butte College.

➡️ Lindsley Armstrong Smith is a nationally-recognized leader with a remarkable career in public service that includes election to three terms in the Arkansas House of Representatives; judicial clerkships with state and federal courts followed by work with a private law firm. She is also an author of 44 publications, including her most recent book, Stateswomen, published by the University of Arkansas Press in 2022. After achieving two degrees from UWF, she earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Arkansas Law School, worked as a Visiting Scholar at both Oxford and Cambridge, and completed the Executive Education Program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Patricia Britnell (BSN '80) is a self-proclaimed "PROUD ARGO Mama." She recently sent this photo of her, her son Jonathan (BS '05) and his wife Jessica (BSN '07) on the night of the 2007 National Honor Society Induction ceremony.
Patricia's two oldest sons are also Argos! Matthew (BA '02) is now serving as a Lt. Colonel in the Army and his wife, Carrie (BA '03) is a family counselor. Joshua (BA '04), is a pastor at Charity Chapel Church. Jonathan is using his degree in Digital Media while working full time for a large church in Austin, TX and Jessica is working as an RN. Patricia is still working as an RN at Ascension Sacred Heart in Pensacola.
