Fifteen intrepid kayakers joined us to explore the “island’s” history, archaeology, and ecology. We discovered how the landform got its name, who the earliest residents were, why its sandy beaches are a perfect place to clean large ships, and how it served as a yellow fever quarantine station in the 19th century. We were also visited by an adorable group of cownose rays, visible in the crystal clear Bay!
Special thanks to Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program and Inweekly Media for tagging along!

Welcome to the Maritime Archaeology Program at the University of West Florida. Join us! The Maritime Archaeology Program at the University of West Florida

Friday was the official end of UWF’s 2023 Underwater Archaeology Fieldschool! Congratulations to our students, Braedin, Hunter, Jenna, Nick and Rin! You guys rocked it, and you’re all welcome to continue diving and discovering with us this fall 🤿

This week, we wrapped up a wonderful second half of Maritime Field School. Thank you to our fantastic students and supervisors!
Graduate Supervisor Angelina DeFelix and Graduate Student Braedin Aubele making strides in Maritime Archaeology!

Graduate student Kyle Brown and undergrad student Rin Amos going to work to investigate magnetic anomalies as part of UWF’s Maritime Archaeology Field School!

The weather shaped up very nicely this week. The crew was able to get out on the water for five gorgeous days of mapping practice, target diving, and remote sensing survey!

Despite the rain, we were able to finish up Scientific Dive Training with students in the second half of Maritime Field School this week! Rain days were spent learning baseline offset and trilateration as well as visiting the USS Alabama, a battleship that was commissioned and launched in 1942, and the USS Drum, a gato-class submarine, both of which served in WWII.

What do you do when waiting out storms at the boat ramp? Fresh mango breakfast, of course!
Seth Glover heading to work last week!

Had a local welcoming us to the boat ramp today! ♥️ I have to admit she was really bad at tying off the boat on the cleat when the crew threw a line to her, but she was regal!!

And... that's a wrap for scientific dive training in UWF's 2023 Maritime Archaeology Field School!

A little stowaway on the jeep yesterday. Had to pull over and let it disembark safely… 😁

Happy birthday to Topside Tim!

Two anomaly diving boats, and a magnetometer boat- sounds like a small fleet! Let’s see what these students find! ♥️

Nolan Swaim, Bria Brooks and Richard Loza on the mag boat today!

Casey Heffron is running our magnetometer survey today!

Only in Pensacola can you be doing maritime archaeology while watching the Blue Angels practice ♥️

Veterans and archaeologists search for missing WWII personnel - University of West Florida Newsroom In June 1944, U.S. forces launched an amphibious assault on the island of Saipan. During that assault, 22 F6F-3 Hellcat aircraft were lost. At least three of those aircraft went down near Tanapag Harbor, Saipan. The aircraft and pilots remain unaccounted for. Efforts began last week to continue the....

Our Marine Services Center plays an integral role in the training of our UWF maritime archaeology students. Here Roberto Delosantos puts a student through the two-day boat handling course, which involves trailering, maneuvering, launching and other real-world skills. So many times I have run across people on projects who are great divers, but know nothing about small craft operation. You have to know how to get the boat in the water before you can dive!

Recently, the UWF Division of Anthropology and Archaeology entered into an agreement with the Key West Botanical Garden Society, Inc. to consult on recording and preserving Cuban “Chugs” or vernacular refugee vessels.
Maritime archaeologists and conservators, Dr. John Bratten and Meghan Mumford visited the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden and conducted an onsite inspection of the collection which includes 9 vessels and 1 modified engine from another vessel. Archaeologists worked taking preliminary measurements and detailed photographs of each vessel.
The ultimate goal of the project is to create a preservation plan for these historically and culturally significant vessels that will not alter the unique appearance of each. Stay tuned!
