Join UWF Leisure Learning for a presentation by Dr. Jennifer Brinkley, UWF Assistant Professor of Legal Studies - Dorothy Kenyon & Pauli Murray: Their Quest for Equality in Jury Service. ⚖️
Dorothy Kenyon and Pauli Murray chose to be lawyers when the profession was less than excited about female advocates. Serving on the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the pair formed a lifelong friendship with lasting impacts. In 1966, Kenyon and Murray co-authored the ACLU’s brief for White v. Crook where they successfully challenged an Alabama statute restricting jury service only to white males. They also encouraged the creation of the ACLU Women’s Rights Project, which would soon have Professor Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the helm. In her brief for Reed v. Reed, a case where the United States Supreme Court unanimously struck down an Idaho law preferring males over females in administering estate matters, Ginsburg credited Murray and Kenyon by listing them as co-authors. This presentation will give a brief history of the life and activism of Dorothy Kenyon and Pauli Murray. It will then go into the history of gender and jury service. Federal court cases will be reviewed to examine how women were ultimately permitted to serve on juries.

Our knowledgeable tour guide, Kristen Carter, shared insights into what goes on behind the scenes during theater productions and answered all of our questions. From a look at the lounge and dressing rooms, to listening to the mesmerizing sounds of the historic organ from the best seats in the house and even a trip down to the basement to see the old dressing rooms - this tour certainly did not disappoint!
Thank you to our guide and friends at the Pensacola Saenger Theatre for this experience learning how art is brought to life onstage!

Faster than a speeding bullet, the SR-71 Blackbird has the reputation of being the most unique aircraft ever built! ✈️ The classroom was full as our instructor shared his experiences as a pilot, including a double sonic boom in the aircraft.
Leisure Learners enjoyed a presentation and discussion with Colonel Joe Kinego, USAF (Ret), an SR-71 pilot who flew over 900 hours in the SR-71 Blackbird's Cold War mission.
A strategic reconnaissance asset for the Free World during the latter 25 years of the Cold War, no other aircraft could fly as fast (over Mach 3) or as high (over 80,000 feet). Just a handful of Air Force pilots ever flew the plane.
A very special thank you to our presenter and our hosts at Florida Public Archaeology Network - Northwest Region for this special experience.

'The Art of Fieldwork' with artist Claudia O'Steen
Claudia O’Steen and Aly Ogasian work collaboratively to produce multimedia, research-based installations by incorporating sculptural elements, digital media, drawing, writing, and photography. Their work focuses on their relationship with the changing environment and uses methodologies borrowed from citizen science to critique traditional notions of exploration and conquest.
O’Steen will discuss artistic fieldwork and the role that it plays in their work and will look at how artifacts and “data” collected from the landscape itself appear in their installation that was part of the Pensacola Museum of Art's 2023 STEAM Exhibition.
