from the NAMI BLOG: "It started in fifth grade: the thoughts and feelings of wanting to die, to disappear. It took me decades to learn how to manage it, and I’m still learning every day. I say manage because that’s what I do: manage. It isn’t just going away for me.
In my late teens, I struggled with drug use. I didn’t care if I lived or died because I didn’t feel like my life was worth living in this world. I was able to come off the drugs through a six-week drug class I took to expunge an arrest. After getting through the program, I worked on seeing my own self-worth. Even after this work, I later had three episodes of serious suicidal ideation over the next 20 years.
Depression can be a lifelong rollercoaster that goes up, down, fast, slow — and sometimes it’s a smooth, steady ride. I really want people to know that the negative thought cycle that accompanies depression often is not a “one and done” victory. Survival is something to celebrate but so is the journey.
I don’t want to focus on the whys — why people experience suicidal ideation — that’s for my therapy sessions (yes, I go to therapy, and I take medication). What I want to focus on is how to help yourself and others.
What Does Suicidal Ideation Feel Like?

Congress returned to Capitol Hill this week to wrap-up its legislative work before the work of the 117th Congress ends later this month and new members of Congress start in January.
https://nami.quorum.us/campaign/43519/
Before they wrap up their work, we need your help to ensure mental health priorities are included in any year-end package.
NAMI joins mental health advocates across the country today for a Day of Action to raise our collective voices around the need to urgently act on mental health. Join us to urge Congress to help people with mental health conditions and their families. While more people than ever are seeking mental health support, our communities’ often lack the resources and services to meet the demand.
.

This year, Congress has focused on mental health more than ever before, coming together on bipartisan efforts around mental health that now need to be passed into law.
This month, we have a major opportunity to address our ongoing mental health crisis by improving our mental health workforce and reimagining our response to people in a mental health or su***de crisis – getting more people the care they need and deserve.
.
This Congress must act before the end of the year– but we’re almost out of time. Please take two minutes to urge your members of Congress to make mental health a priority in any year-end package.

Thank you for your advocacy.

SC Department of Mental Health to Expand Mobile Crisis Services November 9, 2022
Columbia, SC – The South Carolina Department of Mental Health has received a grant of $3 million to expand mobile
crisis services in 10 high-need counties. The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
(SAMHSA) made the award as part of a funding opportunity for Community Crisis Response Partnerships.
The award of $750,000 annually for four years will allow SCDMH to expand its existing Mobile Crisis program by
adding certified peer support specialists to co-respond with master-level clinicians to individuals experiencing a mental
health crisis and provide follow-up.
In addition, at least one law enforcement agency in each of the ten counties will receive funding for tablets and data service plans to facilitate using telehealth services with Mobile Crisis. Doing so will increase law enforcement’s options for including mental health professionals as they respond to incidents with mental health components.
