Because the Music Matters. Hi, my name is Mike, and I'm a DJ... of Excellence! But what does that really mean?
I've ALWAYS been a music junkie, and back in 1983, I went to my first "dance" and was appalled at how lame it was... so I made it my mission to do something about it. Within a few months, I was "helping" and then DJing on my own. 30 years later, I'm having more fun with it than ever! People have asked if I'll ever stop, and my answer is always, "Sure, if it ever stops being fun!"

Getting ready to do that thing I do...
I have come to the conclusion that I am *NOT* a DJ anymore. Sure, I still show up to events, play music, make announcements, and ensure that people have a great time, but I can't identify as a DJ anymore.
I've been part of a DJs group for several months now, and 90% of the conversation is about how horrible it is when people have the nerve to request songs. How every song that people actually like is garbage. How superior they are to every other mere mortal. Followed quickly by asking really basic, entry-level questions about equipment, software, and song sequencing.
At my gigs, I love interacting with people. You got a request? I want to hear it! I may not play it - I'm a human being hired to provide musical entertainment, not a jukebox or ipod. But there have been countless occasions where a request is such a perfect fit for the room at that moment, that I hadn't even thought of, and it makes the gig that much better!
This morning, someone posted a link to the new Taylor Swift video. The first comment is attached in a screenshot.
I have left the group. It did not speak Excellence, and it did not spark joy.
