Hey, E’rybody, what’s growin on?! In light of the current season I thought that I should send you a reminder that you should leave fallen leaves. They provide vital habitat for overwintering wildlife, including insects like butterflies and moths, as well as amphibians and small mammals. They also act as a natural mulch, enriching the soil with nutrients as they decompose, retaining soil moisture, and suppressing weeds. Also, leave your spent plant stems and blooms. Certain insects will use the hollow stems to hibernate in. Ditch social gardening norms and Let’s Get Wild! 🍂🍁🐝🪱🐛🦋🐌🐞🐜🪰🪲🪳🦟🦗🕷️🦎

Hey, everyone! What’s growin on?! While sitting on my front porch steps, enjoying my coffee, I see this guy. It sparkles in the sunlight due to silver metallic flecks. It’s beautiful! What is it? It’s a variegated fritillary caterpillar. This is why it’s important to not clean up your yard until spring. Soon, this critter will cocoon and emerge in the spring. Let your future butterflies rest this winter. You will not regret it. And, as always, let’s get wild!

August's candle wraps you in golden light, like sun-warmed linen on a clothesline. Notes of cotton blossom and sweet coconut drift on a breeze of citrus and sun-kissed earthy undertones. It’s the carefree glow of summer! 🌼🧡

The native seed packet test bed is filling out nicely. Next year I should see the purple cone flowers in bloom. This year it’s been yarrow and black-eyed susans. There has been a lot of butterfly activity. 😊

If you bought any of my seed packets, and you plan to plant this fall, this is what next June will look like for you. The black-eyed Susan’s and yarrow are in bloom right now.

The mower has been down for two weeks. Pre-native plant nerd me would have been quite vexed by this shaggy yard. Native plant nerd me loathes to cut it and possibly kill all the fireflies. I do love watching them take flight at twilight…while listening to a pug pant. 🥰
