Unlike many herons, yellow-crowned night herons are primarily nocturnal, foraging for food at night. They often roost during the day in trees or mangroves. They have a varied diet, primarily consisting of crustaceans like crabs, as well as small fish, frogs, and insects. Their specialized diet makes them particularly adept at hunting in marshy or coastal environments.

The best sunsets are typically found on the Gulf Coast, where the sun dips directly into the water. Locations like Clearwater Beach and Siesta Key are famous for their breathtaking views. They often feature striking oranges, pinks, and purples, thanks to the Florida's unique atmosphere and coastal position, which can enhance light scattering.
