Sometimes we don't realize how much we've adapted until we look back.

Life happens.

Circumstances change.
Challenges arise.
Our bodies change.
Our roles change.
Our environments change.

And because life keeps moving, we find ways to move with it.

In my conversation with Jay Setchell, we talk about how easily adaptation can happen without us consciously recognizing it.

We adjust because, in many moments, "we have to."

Over time, those adjustments can influence how we think, what we expect, how we respond, and even what we believe we're capable of.

That's what makes adaptation such a fascinating part of the human experience.

Sometimes the patterns we carry today make much more sense when we understand what life once required of us.

This was one of the most vulnerable moments I've shared on my podcast.

I talked openly with Kelly Dean about something I've dealt with personally—incontinence when I sneeze - and I have sneezed A LOT!

But something unexpected happened during our conversation.

As we talked, I realized that I had been looking at this as a physical problem I needed to fix.

And suddenly I could see it differently:

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀, 𝘁𝗼𝗼, 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗲.

There was another layer asking for my attention.

That realization hit me deeply during the interview because I've spent years learning to listen to my body—and yet here was an area where I hadn't fully recognized what it was trying to tell me.

Sometimes listening to our bodies isn't about having all the answers.

Sometimes it begins by recognizing that something we've been frustrated with, embarrassed by, or simply trying to fix may also be information worth becoming curious about.

Katie Rizzo shared one of the most beautiful descriptions of grief I've ever heard.

She compared grief to pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the placenta connected Katie and her son. It was something their two bodies created together—something that existed because of their relationship.

And she sees grief in a similar way.

Grief is something she and her son made together.

She carries it because she carries the love and the relationship that created it.

That stopped me.

Because it reframes grief as something more than pain that we're supposed to eventually leave behind.

For Katie, grief is also evidence of connection.

Of love.

Of a relationship that continues to matter.

This was one of those moments in an interview when there really wasn't anything that needed to be added. Her words were enough.

What keeps us moving forward when part of us feels like we can't take another step?

For Jay Setchell, grit, determination, and discipline have played an enormous role.

His life has included years of physical trauma and circumstances that could have given him plenty of reasons to stop.

But Jay's motto is:

"It's always too soon to quit."

In this conversation, we explore where that ability to keep going comes from—and how the experiences we've had, the environments we've grown up in, and the internal resources we've developed can influence the way we respond when life becomes difficult.

Resilience doesn't mean life doesn't affect us.

Sometimes it's what helps us continue moving through the moments that do.

How Childhood Trauma Drives Chronic Illness & The Solution | Cindy Costley — Spirit to Cell Ep 32 09/19/2026

What if a response that looks like dysfunction actually makes sense within the body’s history?

I recently joined Dayna on the Spirit to Cell Podcast for a conversation that went into so many of the ideas at the heart of my work.

For 34 years, I lived with severe allergies and chronic illness. For much of that time, I understood my symptoms primarily through the lens of what was going wrong in my body.

Eventually, I began seeing something else.

Our experiences can teach the body what to anticipate. Those predictions can influence protective responses, physiology, behavior, and the way we respond long after the original experience has passed.

This is what I now describe through The Architecture of Adaptation™:

We adapt to the predictions our experiences teach us to make.

Dayna and I explored how that understanding emerged through my own healing, along with trauma, nervous system regulation, EBDT™, the body's energy and information fields, spirituality, Western medicine, and what it means to work in partnership with the body's natural intelligence.

And underneath the entire conversation was a question I believe is changing the way we think about healing.

Before losing her son, Katie Rizzo says she spent much of her life living in the future.

Thinking ahead.
Planning ahead.
Waiting for what was next.

Grief changed that.

Today, Katie does her best to live in the moment—and poetry has become one of the ways she comes back to herself.

Writing gives her space to notice what she's feeling, reflect on what's happening inside of her, and simply be present with herself.

There was something so beautiful about this part of our conversation.

We spend so much of our lives thinking about where we're going that sometimes we forget to experience where we are now.

Katie's story is a tender reminder that "this moment matters, too."

Sometimes feeling our emotions is hard.

Really hard.

Sitting with pain, grief, anger, fear, or sadness can feel so uncomfortable that we find ways to move around it instead.

We stay busy.
We distract ourselves.
We tell ourselves we're fine.
We try to move on.

In this conversation with Katie Rizzo, I talk about how easily we can bypass what we're feeling simply because allowing ourselves to actually feel it can hurt.

But our emotions are part of our experience—and sometimes what we need most isn't to get past them.

It's to give ourselves permission to be with them.

This was such a raw, heartfelt conversation about grief, love, loss, and what it means to continue living while honoring everything we feel along the way.

What happens when your own experience challenges something you've always believed?

Rob Rene didn't begin as someone convinced by frequency healing.

In fact, his beliefs had given him reasons to question whether any of it was real.

But instead of simply dismissing something he didn't understand, he became curious enough to investigate it for himself.

And what he experienced changed his perspective.

I love conversations like this because they're not about convincing anyone what they "should" believe.

They're about remaining curious enough to ask:

"What if there's more here for me to understand?"

Sometimes one of the simplest ways to interrupt what's happening internally is to come back to something we're doing all day long:

"Breathing."

In this clip, Dennis Henson shares a breathing technique he teaches called "5-21"—a simple practice designed to help us slow down, become more intentional, and shift out of our automatic patterns.

I love practical tools like this because they remind us that creating change doesn't always require doing something complicated.

Sometimes it begins with becoming present enough to interrupt the pattern we're already in.

For many years, my body didn't feel safe. I just didn't know it.

And one of the most powerful shifts in my own healing came when I stopped seeing my body's reactions as something it was doing "to me" and began understanding them as something it had learned to do "for me".

In this clip, I share how frequency healing became one of the tools I used to communicate something different to my body:

"You are safe now."

That idea has profoundly changed the way I understand healing.

Sometimes our bodies don't need to be fought, forced, or fixed.

Sometimes they need new information—and the opportunity to respond differently.
