Osage chef sources locally to create inviting dishes When Chef Jessica Baldus made the challenging decision to move her dessert shop from its roots in Des Moines to her hometown of Osage in 2012, she made it her mission to connect with local farmers in hopes of expanding and featuring locally sourced food.

Belated congratulations to the Osage Green Devils on their State Volleyball appearance!
Did you know the Iowa Farm Bureau has celebrated 17 years as the exclusive title sponsor of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union? As a result of this sponsorship, the IGHSAU has had the opportunity to develop and sustain various initiatives for female students that promote personal character development, wellness and academic achievement. As the title sponsor, the Iowa Farm Bureau makes championship memorabilia and awards (like these volleyballs) available to athletes.

In December, kindergarteners in St. Ansgar and Osage learned about Christmas Tree farms. After their lesson, they did a STEM activity where they were given gumdrops and toothpicks to build a Christmas tree shape.

1st graders in St. Ansgar, Riceville, and Osage learned about cranberries! They saw a video on how they're harvested, did an experiment to see if they float, and 'disected' one to see what they look like on the inside.

Second graders in Osage and St. Ansgar learned many things from a new book "Popcorn Country" by Chris Peterson. For example, popcorn is the only corn that can be popped. Every year Americans eat four and a half billion gallons of popcorn. That is enough to fill the Empire State Building 18 times! Most popcorn is grown in the Midwest states and Indiana grows more popcorn than any other state.

In November, AITC Coordinator Jenny Sullivan visited preschool and K-prep in St. Ansgar and Osage to talk turkeys. After learning new facts about turkeys, students made a turkey puppet and ate a snack of turkey, and crackers.

At the end of harvest, Riceville's 3rd teacher Clark Ebert, had Jenny Sullivan, AITC Coordniator, come in and do a lesson pertaining to harvest. She read "Full of Beans" by Peggy Thomas about Henry Ford and his inventions. After reading the book, students were given a list of items that they had to sort into things that contain soybeans and things that don't.

AITC Coordinator Jenny Sullivan visited 1st graders in St. Ansgar and Kindergarteners in Osage. She brought in a sweet pie pumpkin to show the difference in what these pumpkins look like compared to a carving pumpkin. They made pumpkin pie in a bag and the students loved eating it for a snack that day.

During the month of November with Thanksgiving to celebrate, AITC Coordinator Jenny Sullivan talked to the kindergarten students in St. Ansgar about turkeys. She read one fiction and one non-fiction book about turkeys. Students then played a game called "Roll a Turkey". They had to take turns rolling a dice as they drew all the parts of the turkey to complete a full turkey picture.

Second graders in Riceville were learning about agriculture then and now. AITC Coordinator Jenny Sullivan visited and read them the book "John Deere, That's Who!" Afterward, students worked together in groups to show how farmers did things then and how they are done today based on photos they ordered.

1st graders in Osage learned that turkey is protein on our food plate. Students got a turkey roll up that had something from each food group for a snack. Many thought is was yummy!

Students in Ms. Ryan's 4th grade science class in Osage were amazed at the difference in soil erosion in the three different samples during an Ag in the Classroom lesson this fall.

Check out Spencer Johanns from Osage and his sunflower! He planted a sunflower seed in school as part of an AITC lesson then took his baby sunflower plant home a couple weeks later and transplanted it outside at home. He tended the plant all summer then harvested the seeds, roasted and shared them with his classmates this fall – amazing!

In Iowa, beekeepers are working to get their hives ready for winter. Gregg and Linnea Maakestad visited students in Osage to share about their beekeeping experiences and even brought along some great visual demonstrations. Thanks to Jenny Sullivan and Ag in the Classroom for organizing this awesome visit!

Even though pollination isn't at its peak this time of year, Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, Jenny Sullivan helped some 1st graders realize the importance of the process in a visit this fall.
