One and a half months ago, I set aside today as a mental health day.

I had 100 billion reasons why I shouldn’t. 100 billion more why I couldn’t. I even considered opening up my books at work just a week ago because my brain said, “it’s always better to grind and be more available to your guests.” (My brain betraying me over here like 🤷🏼‍♀️ who, me?!)

Yet my tribe (and especially my husband) encouraged me. They affirmed me. I did need this day off and I deserve it.

Now in this moment I’m existing here so full of peace and happiness. Late morning… still in my house… my curls still a mess… and I’m still sipping coffee while not on my feet.

If you’re waiting for a sign: TAKE THAT BREAK. Block off a day. It’s just one day. (Or take several days in a row- get it, girl!)

Operating out of a place of REST is so very beneficial for you & your fam jam.

Comment below if you feel the weight of grind culture. 👇🏼 •••Especially if you feel like you don’t have enough clout to join this convo right now. Because you DO.••• It’s a real thing. Let’s support each other, friends.

How should you take care of your hair color?

🧐Some folks like to set it and forget it… they trust their hairdresser to make everything right again when they come back for a refresh…

🤔While others are majorly on top of the at-home care.

As with most things in life, the answer is: balance! 🧘🏽 A little bit of good home care. A little bit of reliance on your knowledgeable hairdresser.

The better care you take of your hair at home, the better shape your hair will be in when you walk into your salon!

Here are a couple tips for keeping your color in tip top shape between appointments:
———————————————

1️⃣ If you’re a neutral or cool blonde- don’t be afraid of your purple shampoo! I like to have some of my guests use it less often, but leave it in for 2-3 minutes when they do use it. If you’re a daily purple shampooer, leaving it in for 1 minute is perfect.

(Timing depends partly on the porosity of the hair, so ask your colorist what’s best for you.)

My current fave is the 💜lavender-infused💜 (yes! Lavender!) Blonde Angel Wash by Kevin Murphy. It works like a charm and smells like heaven!

2️⃣ If you heat style (blow dryer, curling iron, flat iron, etc) use a heat protectant. This will help preserve your color/gloss longer, and protect your hair from damage caused by heat.

My current fave is Heated Defense by Kevin Murphy! It’s a lightweight foam that you can use on wet or dry (think second day) hair.

Ask us about Heated Defense and Blonde Angel Wash at your next appointment, or text us to let us know you’re popping in for them. They’re the bomb dot com!

If you’re my guest, you know that I get so excited in this moment at the bowl. Every. Dang. Time.

I love the dusty texture of a clay lightener (that balayage is ready!), I love watching my customized glosses develop, I love having my own sneak peek at the color before anyone else, and I cannot wait to blowdry!

I feel like that kind of excitement is a pretty good litmus test for knowing I’m right where I need to be.

The TRUTH about balayage... ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Here’s the low down on balayage, a beginner’s guide:

1) It takes time. Prepare to spend a few hours in our chair, particularly if you’ve never done free hand painting before. If you’re transitioning from highlights to balayage, that’s a whole different ballgame for an in-person consult. 😉

2) Balayage lifts 2-3 levels of lightness. We’re not trying to reach platinum blonde with this technique. Instead, we’re running hard after that subtle sunkissed lightness that makes everyone think you’re a full-time sunbathing laker... without the sunburn. 😎

That being said, the 2nd ✌🏼 balayage sesh is ideal for repainting those previously lightened sections and making them pop!

3) Balayage can be more expensive, but you have to think about it like this: you’re probably coming to the salon less often than with traditional highs, and your colorist has gone through extensive training to know the ins and outs of hand painting & glossing, hair color that will compliment your skin tone, exactly how & where to place that clay lightener. Balayage is truly a specialized and unique service. You’re paying for our expertise.

4) It really is low maintenance! Many of my balayage guests come to me once a quarter, or once every 6mo to have their balayage brought up. (See previous post about glosses & maintenance appts!)

☀️ DM now to book your balayage sesh! Openings starting in June/July. ☀️

Did you know you don’t have to do a full balayage every time you visit the salon? Here are a couple ways to keep your blonde popping!

⚡️Book a Gloss⚡️ Schedule a gloss appt 4-6 weeks from your last balayage to maintain the perfect blonde tone or refresh the depth of lowlights. Lowlights give dimension and make that blonde look even brighter!

⚡️Book a Mini Balay⚡️ A mini balayage brightens those oh-so-important sections you see when you look in the mirror. Around your face, your front hairline, and your part. It’s a shorter appt time, which means you can look fresh faster and soak up the rest of your day.

Reserving one of these “between” sessions allows your hair to be its best, brightest self... and happens to be the perfect time to also sharpen your cut!

Swipe for that 2nd sesh GLOW ✨

How lovely is this warm chocolate brown? Such a fun wintery change!

👉🏼See previous post in my feed for a chat about successfully filling those blonde ends when going darker. 👈🏼

The perfect melt courtesy of a seamless balayage. 🖌

For the perfect finish, you have to start strong.

A correcting gloss can temporary conceal accidental lines and hiccups from a not-so-perfect lightening service... but those mistakes show back up over time as the glosses fade. Here my advice for color that has real longevity:

Colorists, book yourself enough time (clients expect to spent a few hours in the chair!) so that you can paint thoughtfully. Careful sectioning, placement, & painting will make your finishing glosses so so easy.

Let your painting & lightening work do the heavy lifting for you. Let your glosses simply add tone or shine or dimension to what has already been painted well.

Take your time and take a deep breath. No correcting needed. You’ve got this. 🤍

I’m living for these luscious cocoa tones.

These days have been full to the brim of babes going from blonde to dark. If there’s ONE SECRET I could share with you... let it be this:

💛🧡❤️Fill those ends! ❤️🧡💛

(See what I did there?)

When you’ve lifted to a beautiful blonde, you’ve busted through the natural red, orange, and some yellow pigment that is naturally underlying in everyone’s hair. (EVERYONE has warmth!)

So for fuller, lively, reflective browns when you go back to dark, you’ll 100% have to put those warm tones back into the hair during your dark color application.

If you don’t, your ends will look hollow, and that’s no fun.

I do love a good trendy mushroom-y brown, which is also currently all the rage, but that’s not the same as accidentally leaving the ends hollow. 😉

Give me all the cocoa browns! I love ‘em. So much.

➡️ Self reflection + Gratitude ⬅️
I’ve been neglecting my mental health during this season. Pushing through and working hard. Accomplishing much and crashing into bed each night. A dear friend called me out in the sweetest way and challenged me: is my work schedule serving me?

I’m sure I’m not alone. We’re all taking this season one day at a time.

But that question shook me. Is my schedule serving me? My focus has always been first to serve my people, my clients, not myself. I love them (you) dearly, and I will continue to serve them fully. But I must also make sure my schedule is healthy and balanced for me.

I’m currently honing on better set work hours that do serve me and my people as well. Set hours for building my business’ social media presence. Firm hours for responding to (and not responding to) my beloved clients.

Having said all this, I’m responding to private messages and texts for appointments as fast as possible when I receive them. I so appreciate the unwavering patience that my clients give me.

Thank you for allowing me to respond thoughtfully in my own timing (especially for text consultations). Thank you for having buckets of understanding during a very busy holiday season. And thank you for always supporting my small business. You’re the pb to my jelly. 🥜🍇

Cheers to me finally figuring out reels after a work bestie found the glitched out 👻 -invisible- 👻 music button!

Big deal transformation for this cutie. I love a good global blonding sesh!

I hope everyone is enjoying their extra day off! We all need a little personal day/ mental heath day right about now, don’t we? I myself might jog over to my local coffee shop and treat myself before I have a much-needed nature study sesh with my little boys. I might also pull some weeds in my neglected shade garden, who knows? Clean out the muck, bring on the fresh & new. ✌🏼

08/29/2020

The world seems so harsh right now, but I have to believe that there is still good, still peace, still joy to be had.

08/28/2020

I spent the whole day yesterday thinking it was Friday... so I guess I get two Fridays this week? I’ll call that a win! Double ready for the weekend with these blonde waves + surfer vibes. 🏄🏽‍♀️

Can we talk a smidge about saturation with clay lighteners? I get so excited about hair talk. 👏🏼👏🏼 This is the ideal thickness for clay lightener if you want maximum lift. If you can see the hair through the lightener, simply paint more on until it is totally white.
.
One of my favorite little tricks is to not saturate fully on previously-lifted ends that are bright enough. Instead, on those blonde ends I will paint a thinner layer of clay lightener and let it process the whole time OR paint it on the ends thicker only when the rest of the color is practically done processing. It just depends on how much time you have to give, and if your guest is double booked or not! (I very much miss double booking right now, but I’m just humbled and grateful to be open at all!)
.
••WHY?•• Why worry about painting the ends at all if they’re already bright? Let me tell you! 👩🏼‍🏫🤍 Lifting those bright ends just a smidge serves a dual purpose. It will basically cleanse the hair of all leftover color from 1) their previous gloss treatment and 2) the purple shampoo they’ve been using at home. This cleansing gives you a blank slate from top to bottom so that you can pour on a fresh gloss.

08/07/2020

A fresh before & after! Lots of babylights for this babe, and always a little tiny root shadow. I never leave my blondes without softening the “edges” at the base.
.
Of course the real 👉🏼SECRET👈🏼 🤫 is to begin blending as soon as you brush that lightener on. A gloss can’t fix everything. Bear in mind that a gloss will eventually fade out! ••So whatever you paint on in lightener, which is very permanent, will ultimately be what your guest sees in a couple months.•• If you paint in softness, they’ll get to enjoy that until they’re ready to have a refresher gloss between appointments. 👍🏼

I can’t with this gorgeous blonde. The color, the perfect baby boo, her sweet spirit, it’s too much. This beauty last had her hair colored in January 👏🏼 2019. 👏🏼 She maintained the tone of her blonde & used great products... this “before” is proof of the importance of glosses & good at home care.
..
We did entirely foil work: lots of highs (Schwarzkopf BlondMe with 7 vol, then 7 + 20 vol, then 20 vol) placed at varied shallow distances from the scalp, some almost touching, some a little further down. Saturation is key!! We also picked up some of the skipped sections after everything else, did a smallish weave, and brought the blonde (30vol) up a few inches there just to soften the line. Shadow root & custom gloss. @ Bagnell Dam Strip

I’ve been a hairdresser for almost a decade. I first declared I would grow up to be an artist when I was two years old. I first dreamed of being a hairdresser back when I was still a baby high schooler. Sometimes I dwell on the thought that I did grow up to be an artist and a hairdresser, I’m living a good life, I’ve learned from and partnered with some of the most exceptional artists in the industry, and I’m overcome with gratitude. My choice to follow my heart down an unknown path has been so positive and life-giving. You will never regret working hard and breathing into your dreams until they become your reality.⠀
