Pets Going with Grace

Pets Going with Grace

Hi! I'm Jen Starr, owner of FixYourImages Photography, established in 2005. I founded Going with Grace in 2012, encouraging pet parents to document their beloved furry companions when their journey over the rainbow bridge is near.

I never realized how many dogs would touch my heart until I became a pet photographer. I only meet each pet briefly, but they are extremely special to me for a lifetime. Over the past 12 years, I've received numerous emergency requests to photograph critically ill or aging pets. I will always try to rearrange my schedule to accommodate such requests. Knowing the unbearable pain of losing a pet, I

Sweet 'ol Jelly Roll had a Going with Grace session with me the other night. I felt I had to include an embarrassing photo of her jelly "rolls" in the top left of this collage so you could truly appreciate the adorable name. Jelly's Mom even incorporated her own baby blanket into the photo session which was really special. Jelly's little face was absolutely precious and she literally curled up into my lap on the bridge after we were done. These are the moments I never forget, even if I only meet your pet for a short amount of time.

"You were so patient with my old Jelly Roll, and able to capture her little personality, despite her being camera shy. You are such a talented photographer and I am so glad I found you. I did not know what to expect and would have been happy with one good picture of Jelly, yet you captured so many beautiful images. I wish I had been taking pictures of Jelly's whole life with you. It was well worth the time and money to have these pictures for when the time comes that I have to say goodbye."

Meet sweet Willie the pug! He had a Going with Grace session last week. He was full of many expressions, but I especially enjoyed his grumpy wrinkly face when I wasn't fast enough with the next round of treats.

I feel like this series of images explains the emotions a pet parent experiences during a Going with Grace session. It's the classic "posed" photo, followed by silly interactions, kisses and then the realization that you are saying goodbye soon.

I tend not to even see the microexpressions my camera captures until I am home and editing. I try never to cry during sessions because this is a celebration of your pet's life.

However, I've absolutely cried at my computer as I edit images. My heart always longs for these moments to bring pet parents some peace during the difficult days ahead.

I met sweet Smokey for a Going with Grace session recently. Today, he's set to have a special last day being spoiled before he crosses the bridge. He will be together again with his late furry companion Autumn. (Her pawprints are shown in the shape of a heart in the canvas shown below) Please keep his family in your prayers as they navigate through this difficult time. Haley wrote these kind words about her experience with me. I am so thankful for each person I meet who trusts me with these delicate moments in their life.

"Jennifer is an unbelievable woman with a huge heart for people and their beloved pets. She is extremely professional, patient, easy to work with, communication is prompt, and she really listens to you while also giving great feedback and directions from start to finish. I'm so glad I found her and and that she offers this unique experience! We tried a few ideas, and she knew all sorts of tricks to get our old pooch to cooperate, then within maybe 24 hours she sent the best proofs to pick from. I'm blown away how the final images turned out way better than I imagined, she has a wonderful eye for her photography. She's well worth the investment for those life long cherished memories. Thank you again, Jennifer, we love and appreciation all you do!"

Update: Sweet Goofy crossed the rainbow bridge the next day after his photo shoot. "Goofy passed away Wednesday evening. I am so glad we still decided to take the pictures. The same day you saw him, he became unable to even stand. He could no longer move." While these moments break my heart (and probably those reading this too), they also remind me how blessed I am to give memories to those suffering through the loss of a pet. You can just see in his eyes he doesn't want to leave his Momma but he knows it's almost time. [05/19/12]   Please feel free to share your favorite memory of a pet who has crossed the rainbow bridge. Ready... go!

[05/10/12]   What is your best advice to those who might be coping with a pet who is terminally ill?

[04/30/12]   For those with Senior pets - how do you keep them healthy and young at heart?

[04/26/12]   How old was your pet when they passed? Did they leave any furry siblings behind?

[04/25/12]   There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.
