The body heals at rest…

I say it over and over again.

It’s the main thing that acupuncture helps you do is rest.

It allows the body to step out of fight or flight and into rest and digest.

Who doesn’t need to relax?

Even if it’s not physical symptoms , most people experience anxiety, stress, overwhelm, insomnia, and other aspects of mental-emotional imbalance. Acupuncture helps by letting you rest. It’s simple.

Whatever it is, I’d love to help. Book with link in bio or check out www.fernacupuncture.com 🌿✨

It feels appropriate that I’d continue to re-introduce myself here, not just because it’s been awhile but because I’m over here re-inventing myself so much these days!

Hello again! For some of you, I’m a familiar friend or face and for some of you, I may be new.

Before anything, I’m prouder than ever to say I’m a mama to a sweet 7.5 month old named Atlas. It’s in this last week that it’s really hit me that everything I’ve worked so hard on myself to heal these last seven years has been preparing me for this, for motherhood. It is by far the most important job I have ever done and will ever do.

I’m also a Doctor of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, Birth Doula, and Reiki practitioner. It has been my own self healing journey with anxiety and passion for my own health that have molded me into the practitioner I am today.

I am extremely passionate about women’s health, in particular the perinatal journey. This actually extends far beyond pregnancy.

My particular phase being 7.5 months postpartum is so often forgotten. Most women are considered healed from childbirth at 6 weeks postpartum. It’s around that time or even 3-4 months that people think you’re set and cruising. But postpartum can extend far beyond that, and I’d argue in some ways, forever. Pregnancy and childbirth stay with you your whole life.

Your children are an imprint of you and watching them grow is beautiful and also challenging and heartbreaking at the same time.

All of this! the joy, the sadness, physical pain or discomfort, dis-ease and beyond, require support.

This is where I come in. I am not just a women’s health acupuncturist. I am also a Classical Five Element practitioner, a style of acupuncture rooted in the spirit and in treating each individual for who they are.

I am here to see you beyond your fertility journey, your postpartum depression or anxiety, your pain or your autoimmune disease. I am here to see you.

I will sit with you and hear your story. I will hold your hand and your tears, and I will probably cry with you. Because this experience is just not meant to be lived alone.

This is what I’m here for. The good, the bad, the ugly. I’m here in the trenches with you.

Happy Fall Equinox! Nothing like starting out the season with a dirty butter chai with a bit of pumpkin from Nectarine Grove and catching up with our friend and fellow acupuncturist Alisa Galvan, L.Ac.,IBCLC !

Some homemade tomato sauce from garden tomatoes gifted to us from a client that we made over the weekend 🍅

Currently sitting outside while baby naps and gathering myself for a busy week ahead and asking nature for a little inspiration and how I can be in service of myself and others for this time.

I have many clients I’m supporting through different phases of the fertility journey right now and using all of what I know and also learning a lot.

What are some questions you have around fertility that you’d like to see me share on here?

It took me a few weeks to get another Postpartum Series video up between traveling, coming home, getting back into a routine, and dealing with some very important and urgent adulting things!

I’m back with Postpartum Series Part 9, which is all about pumping at work and returning to work while breastfeeding.

In this short clip, I’m talking about my Eufy E20 wearable pump, which is my workday pump. I like that it’s slightly less obvious than some of the other wearables. And it also has its flaws!

Actually, right after making this video I confirmed it was officially not working right after about a week of having issues with it and needing to contact the manufacturer 😂🫠

Despite what could just be my own user error, I do think it’s a good pump but does require several attempts to get it right for you!

My Spectra S1 is still my primary pump, but having a wearable has made pumping between patients so much more doable for me.

In the full video, I share more about what pumping at work has actually looked like for me- the logistics, the pumps I use, maintaining supply, the mental load of making breastfeeding + working + motherhood all happen in the same day!

Watch the full video Postpartum Series Part 9: Pumping at Work- Returning to Work While Breastfeeding is now on YouTube!

Atlas discovered a lime today on our walk.

I had found a few limes on the ground from some nearby trees and as I was carrying him in from our walk he grabbed onto one of them and didn’t want to let it go. So he got to play with it while I made lunch and decided to cut it in half and let him try it per baby led weaning style recommendation. Surprisingly , he really liked it and had fun playing with it!

As we’ve been introducing solids, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Five Flavors in Chinese Medicine: sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty.

Today was sour.

In Chinese Medicine, each flavor has its own qualities and effect in the organ systems. Sour is associated with the Liver. It has an astringent and gathering function, which helps to contain and pull things into the system. In a balanced amount, sour food can support the Liver in all its functions, one of the main ones being storing blood.

It’s been really fun for me to dive back into the basics of the medicine with these flavors and seeing how my baby reacts to them.

Apparently, Atlas is a lime guy 🍋‍🟩

✨evening vibes for last session of the day 🍂🍁

Making it through this heat wave with a summer salad, coconut citrus water, and some avocado mash for baby 🥗

Chinese Medicine food therapy isn’t keen on uncooked vegetable, dairy, or cold food/iced beverages. They are said to create dampness in the body which can slow down digestion and create further imbalance. Chinese Medicine also encourages eating with the seasons, and there are some cold foods by nature that are still part of the medicine such as watermelon and cucumber.

I take a little bit of Chinese Medicine, some other nutrition philosophy, and intuition in how I determine what’s best for me and my baby.

I also tell all of my clients that in general it is better to have the majority of foods cooked and to limit iced beverages and raw food. But on a hot day, have an iced beverage, a salad , or some ice cream! Because I also believe foods that bring joy nourish the heart.

For those trying to conceive, I steer towards warmer foods as we want to think about the uterus as a warm incubator. Too much cold in general going into the body can also bring cold into the uterus, making it more difficult for conception to occur. Even for fertility cases, on a hot day, it’s ok to have some cooling foods and beverages.

I will often suggest ways to counter the cold by adding some warming foods or spices like cooked chicken or veggies on a salad, ginger tea after eating, or adding cinnamon to some yogurt or on top of fruit.

It’s really all about finding balance. Too much in excess, even warm or hot food can also create imbalance. In general, I’m an everything in moderation kinda girl. As long as the majority of food is well made and well sourced, even the “less healthy” things can still bring health to the body.
